Anderson & Stewart Take Timed Qualifying | 2014 San Diego SX

Monster Energy Supercross has moved south for the sixth round of the 2014 season in San Diego, California, the final West Coast race until the spring. Qualcomm Stadium serves as tonight’s venue, and the massive football field has been transformed into a slick, technical course that will challenge the best racers in the 250 and 450 divisions. With numerous American armed force bases in and around the city, Feld has designated the event as Military Appreciation and nearly every team has designed one-off gear, graphics, or parts.

While California is in the midst of a vicious drought, a band of rain moved over the San Diego region late in the week and soaked some sections of the track. Track crews covered the soil before the storm, but the added moisture has made for a very slick surface. Numerous rhythms and an option lane are part of the track design, but it seems that riders are sticking to one line around the entire track.

250 Timed Qualifying

This will be the final time riders in the 250 West Coast class will race for nearly two months, and those contending for the title are looking to make an impression before the break. Rockstar Energy Racing KTM’s Jason Anderson posted the fastest lap of the division late in the final session, a 47.562, but the current co-point leader had a few issues throughout the afternoon. During the first timed practice, tempers flared between Anderson and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Jessy Nelson, and the two riders exchanged a series of block passes and brake checks. While running a fast pace in the second outing, Anderson tipped over and scraped that lap. He was able to recover, however, and take the top spot from Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, who clocked a 47.671.

Justin Hill continues to find a flow in his sophomore season, and the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider nabbed third on the charts with a 48.107. Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda teammates Cole Seely and Malcolm Stewart rounded off the top-five, respectively. Seely comes into this round tied for first in points with Anderson, and both riders are sporting the red backgrounds.
