In one of the closest championships in Motocross history, New Zealander, Ben Townley still holds a two point lead after tying on points with Monster Energy, Pro Circuit, Kawasaki team-mate Ryan Villopoto at the 9th round of the AMA Motocross champs in Millville, Minnesota.
In a reverse of moto wins, Townley took honors in the first grueling 30 minute moto on a rough and sandy Spring Creek MX park circuit. BT hounded his younger team-mate, Villopoto from the time the gate dropped with Villopoto letting Townley by around the halfway point to see if he could follow the Kiwi’s superior lines. BT upped the pace and dropped Villopoto as he won the first race convincingly.
The final and deciding race of the day had Townley in the perfect position to gain maximum points as he got past rookie Trey Canard, to control the race out front. With fellow Kawasaki team-mates Brett Metcalfe and Ryan Villopoto in hot pursuit, BT tried to focus on the track ahead and was not taking any unnecessary risks. In a thrilling duel, both Monster Energy, Pro Circuit, Kawasaki riders came inches from touching as they raced through the treacherous Millville sand whoops but kept it clean as Villopoto took the lead from Townley. Townley did all he could to match his rivals speed but had to settle for second, losing out on the overall victory.
“I’ve got take my hat off to Ryan admitted the 22-year-old who is based in Talahassee Florida. “He got out front and got going in the second moto. I tightened up in the middle and he got by me I didn’t have an answer for him. It’s a still two dog fight for the championship race and it’s great that we can still keep the racing really fair and clean. I saw three Kawasaki’s up there in the start and it’s been a perfect Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki podium sweep for Mitch and the team so I’m pumped for them as well, announced Townley.
As the AMA racing calendar permits another week off before heading to round 10 at Steel City Raceway in Pennsylvania on the 25-26 August, Ben Townley will be putting in plenty of hard work to make sure all areas are covered as he fights for the coveted title of AMA Motocross Lites champion.
