Catching Up With…Austin Stroupe

The wild rider from North Carolina has been out of action, and really out of the spotlight since the early rounds of the series.  As it seems whenever any rider goes missing for any extended period of time, the rumor mill kicks into overdrive.  Fortunately, just as the rumors really began to pick of steam for Austin Stroupe, we found the young Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider putting in some practice laps so we took a few minutes to help him put some of those rumors to rest.  Although he probably felt a little rusty on the track, rest assured, Austin looked liked his normal speedy self.

So where has Austin Stroupe been?

Well, I broke my hip at Hangtown and it has been about a month and a half now.  I wasn’t able to do any kind of training or anything for about a month.  I just got released Monday and yesterday was my first day back riding.  During my time off I was in North Carolina for a couple weeks and did therapy for about a month, but I really haven’t been able to do much of anything.  I was listening to races on the weekends, but now I am back to riding and training.  I am lucky enough that I am able to get back on the bike in time to do the last four rounds, which is what I want to do.  Last year I missed half the series, so I really want to get back and race and I am just excited to be training and 100 percent.

Does that mean you plan to come back at Unadilla?

Well, it will either be Unadilla or Budds Creek.  I don’t want to come back on a track that is too difficult.  Right now I have a month until Unadilla so I am just looking to get some time on the bike and want to be 100 percent strong.  I would rather just do three rounds than race four and do crappy.  I just want to come back and do good.

Take us through your injury.  What really happened?

At Hangtown, I was in about sixth or seventh and Barcia pretty much just crashed in front of me.  It happened so fast when he did it, but I do know that his bike came up and hit me in the head.  In the airport I was hurting a lot. I went into the doctor that Monday and he told me my hip was broken.  They said it would be about four weeks, then it turned into a full month, then a month and a half.  I just did as much therapy as I could during that time, but I haven’t really done much of anything else.  I just want everyone to know that I was hurt, and that’s about it.   I haven’t been able to ride and haven’t gone to any races.

So you realy just took the time that you needed.  People were speculating that maybe you had been kicked off the team.

Yeah, I just sat back and relaxed and didn’t hear anything from anybody.  I was just reading some of those comments online. All I did was have some down time and got to spend time with my family.  I was bummed though.  I was hurt last year too and really just want to be out there racing with those guys.

Do you have a deal for next year? Are you signed already?

No, I don’t have a deal yet. I love my team and would like to stay here for sure.  I am guessing that it all depends on how I come back for these last few rounds.  I had a great supercross season with a couple wins, but switching to the outdoors I wasn’t even prepared at all and those first two rounds were really terrible.  I think I need to show everybody that I have speed for outdoors, because they haven’t really seen my speed outdoors.

Even though it was last year, you did win a National, so you obviously have speed.

Yeah, but it has been so long that I have to show something new.  There are so many new guy that are going fast.

Why were you not prepared for outdoors this year.

Well, I did race East Coast this year and that was a little different.  I liked it, but the break I had last year was about two months.  But coming from the East Coast, I had to jump right into the nationals.  I was having a little trouble with testing so I just wasn’t prepared and didn’t have enough time for myself.  Also I didn’t have enough time to ride more outdoor style tracks.  It seemed like Glen Helen came up so quick, and from there I simply didn’t feel ready, and then I got hurt anyways.
