Supercross fans have a love/hate relationship with Jason Lawrence. Similar to Howard Stern’s fan base, those who like the young rider want to see what he is going to do next, but those who hate him also want to see what he is going to do next. Either way, there is no denying J-Law’s talent on a motorcycle, as he has proven in his only two races in the Supercross class. We found J-Law roaming the pits on Saturday night, following his fifth place finish and he let us in on his progress and his plans for he remainder of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.
How did your first real 450 Supercross race go?
Pretty good. It was something where I didn’t really know what to expect because, like you said, Daytona wasn’t really a Supercross race. I just came into it with the same expectations that I had for Daytona, which was not much. I want to be five, which is funny because that is right where I ended up. Top five to me is really good. Third is really what I’m going for because those first two guys are almost in a different league right now. Third is like winning a race to the manufacturers because they know they are not getting Bubba (James Stewart) and they know they are not getting (Chad) Reed. So, I just want to be the guy who people want the most so I can get a good manufacturer (to support) my team next year.
So you are really just looking at these races as possible sponsorship opportunities for next year?
Yeah, it doesn’t really have anything to do with points, so I just want to do everything I can to make my team look good until next year.
Going into Indy, you mentioned that you didn’t feel very comfortable on the bike but you are definitely starting to look more like your 250 days right now.
It’s starting to come for sure. I just takes a while to get used to throwing that bike around; it’s a lot different. I think I’m getting more comfortable with that, but there is still a lot to be gained and I feel like I can just keep getting better and better. I think everyone else is already at their peak, because right now we are mid-way through the season, they’re on a roll and I’m just coming into it. So I’m going to be getting more intense as the series goes on and I think everyone else backs it down a bit, so it should be getting a little bit better for me.
Does that mean you plan to run the rest of the series in the Supercross class?
Yeah I’m going to do all of them. I’m not really sure on the West Coast races of what I am going to do; it just depends on how I’m doing in the 450s.
So you might drop back down?
If I’m getting podiums; being on the podium in the big class is way better than winning the little class. If I’m getting podium consistently in the 450s then I would like to stay in that class.
One last thing, do you want to give some love to the Englishtown, NJ crew?
Yeah (laughs)! All the dudes from Jersey. Its sick. That’s where I was born and raised and that’s why I’m as good as I am, definitely. All the guys back East. The Northeast develops great riders as you know. I think it has a lot to do with the availability of riding spaces. It’s not full of track homes yet!

man transworld, you guys really love j-law don’t you? he’s always being caught up with you guys, ever find any other riders around? or are you guys partying and seem to find j-law there all the time so it’s easier?
March 25th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
keep the j law stuff coming. much better reading about him the most of the other riders anyway. but maybe thats cause im from the north east.
March 25th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Haha get the f**k outta here. Whats wrong with interviewing someone whose placed in the top five of his only two races, at the top level, with hardly any preperation. Transworld just knows whats up. Sounds to me like your pissed he can blow smoke and still make it in the sport. Stop the hatin, kids on speed.
March 25th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Everyone’s always talking bad about J-Law. Hav’nt you realized that he might be a decent guy since he gives up his time to do interviews unlike the rest of the guys that think that their time is too valuable. Props to J-Law for giving back to the fans.
March 25th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
I cant wait to see Chad hold the #1 plate. Theres no stopping Reed now
March 25th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

March 25th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

March 26th, 2009 at 8:01 am
I thought he got his gas at am pm
March 26th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Moron’s should stop using capitals for every word if they a going to preach about spelling.

Thanks for the Jersey love! We were ripping open practice at E-town yesterday. I won’t forget Jlaw scrubbing under me on the Pension Road Plunge. I looked over cuz I knew he was coming, and I actually had to look down to JL looking up at me. Hahaaa good shit! Good luck in the big bore class, keep doin what you do!

Jersey represent!
We were rippin open practice yesterday at Etown.
Quick JL story while I was practicing on a Wednesday a couple years ago at Englishtown. I was coming up to the “pension road plunge” and I knew JL was coming up quick, so when I hit the plunge I looked over to see him, he was actually all scrubbed out, about 4 feet below me looking up at me. That was awesome! Kill it the rest of the season in the big class.

March 26th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Bayo I love the Jersey shout out! Always lookin for a way to give the east coast the rep it needs. Keep sneakin em it!
Yoba is the man!
March 26th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
DIDO, DIDO, DIDO!!!! i have to admit, the kid is fast and is getting better… but i still hate him and am sick of hearing about him.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
DIDO!!!!! i have to admit, the kid is a good fast rider but i still hate him and am sick of hearing his name all the time…
March 26th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
no there isnt
March 26th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Sucks to hear about a good rider and team owner like Jlaw needing to source for brand to ride on for 2010. that just makes me sick! Jlaw you are a smoke fast guy and don’t change for anyone F@#$ em!!!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Lawrence is the greatest right now, not necessarily cause hes winning any kind of championship, just for being a true, hardcore, no nonsense motocrossin’ animal. No hate to James or Chad, you guys are the balls-johnson and all. Jlaw just keeps it real! Hes funner to watch ride, or talk, than anyone else. I hope he sticks around this sport for a long time, he’ll be my favorite out there til hes gone. Cant wait to watch him own southwick lol :p NE riders got the heart!
March 26th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Someone needs to take this fool out!
March 26th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Do you realize how much it costs to run a team? Lawrence is wise to be looking for additional sponsors.
March 26th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
i personally don’t like DIDO’s music that much. Ditto on j-law’s speed though. he’s insane right now.
March 26th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
And the room goes silent, we all look at each other and I say,
“So anyways,… His bike looks sick for sure. In the main it looked to me that Jlaw had a little something for Short, I feel he just didnt want to mess with shorts champ points standing and be super aggresive in attempt to get him back.”
March 26th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
I agree with dgizzy and anonymous.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
i dont think you realize that its not that easy to just set up an interview with every rider out there. if they can get a hold of j law and hes willing to do an interview, they should definatly do it. especially with the success he has had.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Ya that was a wise decision and great riding.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
I agree. Lawrence brings excitement to an otherwise boring Stewart/Reed season
March 26th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Catching up with J-Law? How hard is it for you guys to catch up with him? Doesn’t he have an office at TW or at least keep his coloring books there?
March 26th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
haha, good one, u should be a comedian dude. u got talent. i would love to see u catch up with him. he’s wicked fast
March 26th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Props to jlaw for doing the interviews but I still don’t care for him much. All that crap about he’s looking to have new sponsor help is retarded. His speed/talent… he shouldn’t be looking for sponsors, they should be looking for him. But unfortunately big factory teams aren’t going to put up with his foolish acts. Maybe J-law will wake up and realize he’d have more sponsors than he could ever ask for if he would straighten his act up. He’s super fast and other than reed and stewart he’s more talented than most of the guys out there. Go Reed!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Last time I checked, educated Americans don’t use an apostrophe in “morons.” Also, my friend from kindergarten just told me that you can’t ask a question using just one word. “Spelling?” Unless this is the title of a book you have written, you probably shouldn’t capitalize the whole thing either.
March 26th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Agreed! I mean she had that one part in that Eminem song and that was alright, but otherwise, eh, I could take it or leave it. Michael Bolton though, now that’s another story. I celebrate his entire collection!
March 26th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
I believe he may still be eligible for contingency since Yamaha does sell an all white YZ450.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:41 am
Hey Bayo, its great to see you doing work for a mag like Transworld.
If you don’t remember, I raced against you a few years ago at Atco one time - I was on a YZ125 and you were on a CR. I think you were doing a writeup for a class you were taking at the time.
Anyway, glad to see all your hard work paid off - and good job on the JLaw interview!

I think that by him riding in the 450 class he realizes this is his last breath and he is maturing as and adult, while keeping his edge.I met him before and he is a polite young man.
March 27th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Well, I only raced at Atco once, so I do remember that. I miss that little CR125…slow but fun to ride. Thanks for the good wishes.
March 27th, 2009 at 11:15 am
haha your an idiot dude. that made me laugh your so dumb. one word, “spode”.
March 27th, 2009 at 11:16 am
alright enough grammar kids, who cares? we race motocross!
March 27th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
F that, Enya 100%!
March 27th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Bayo you are wasting your time responding to comments that are made by someone on a second grade reading level. What the hell does it mean to be “a smoke fast guy” anyway? How can someone who types that even begin comprehend the financial ramifications of running an entire MX team, let alone being a privateer?
March 27th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
true that bro
March 27th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
What he means is that Transworld always has something about J-Law on the site, Swap is on his nuts…
March 27th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
That don’t make no sense
March 27th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
I don’t know….I thought I saw a blue and white clause in their somewhere. Oh well…J Law rips it up Lechein style, you know whats up.
March 28th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Atco is cheeks man. No inside lines all set up for quads now. And J-Law is an animal…… If he trains for outdoors Watch out he be a podium contender everyrace! And on a Personal level Kid is good peeps. Funny as hell to hang with and always stirrin it up!Give him a break haters. Your just mad that your not as fast and that if you talked trash to his face He’d definatley punch you in the face! Kid is real people no fake! Atlantic Co. New Jersey in the House! Maple Pit,Estell,Petersburg. What!!!!! Get em J
March 28th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Whats the problem? J Law adds color to the sport, & makes it more interesting to watch. Hopefully Daytona was a wake-up call, & he realizes how critical conditioning is in the 450 class. I would like to see J Law with a Ricky Carmichael type team behind him. A strong manager, & trainer etc; with his obvious natural talent he would be awesome.
