Catching Up With…Trey Canard

While the silly season continues, with numerous riders still searching for rides, one racer was lucky enough to have a deal locked up a while ago.  Trey Canard was sidelined early in the outdoor nationals with a badly broken arm suffered while leading the Mt. Morris National.  Now the Oklahoman is healed up and ready to get back to it after being on the sidelines for several months.  We caught up with “Turbo” Trey to find out what he has been up to lately and his deal for next season.

What have you been up to recently?

After my injury I went to a few of the Nationals.  Then recently I headed up to Lake Shasta in Northern California for a few days.  That was pretty cool and now I’m just getting ready for the 2010 series.

Take us back through your injury.  How did it all go down along with your recovery?

The injury was definitely a bummer, but I think a lot of good came out of it as well, so I can’t be too bummed.  I broke my radius so they had to plate that up and I also broke the ulna, but that didn’t need surgery.  It was where the growth plate is located, which I guess is softer tissue, so it takes longer to heal.  It took about 11 weeks to get to a point where it was in good shape.  A similar injury that a little higher up the arm would have taken about six weeks to heal.  It’s good now though. I’ve got full mobility now so everything is solid.

That’s great news. So it shouldn’t be a hindrance of any kind in the future?

Yeah.  Well, you can never predict the future, but as of right now it hasn’t given me too much trouble.

So how long have you been back on the bike?

Maybe about seven or eight weeks.

Was there ever a time when you thought about doing the last few nationals, or was it to a point that you figured you would just getting ready for Supercross in January?

Actually, I almost raced Steel City.  Jimmy Alberston had me all revved up for it. I was feeling really good on the bike and I was super close to doing it.  But I decided that I just need to give it a couple more weeks and when I did race, I wanted to be 100 percent prepared and be ready to win.  It definitely wasn’t the appropriate time.

Did that have anything to do with trying to secure a possible contract for next year to show that you can still race?

No, not at all.  I already had some offers on the table at that point, and I felt lthat if I had gone out there it would have not done anything for me, aside from making myself feel a little better. I definitely would not have gone to Steel City to show anything or prove anything.

So you have resigned with Geico Powersports/Honda for 2010, correct?

Yes. I had considered riding for the Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team and had an offer and I was close.  But the people on the Geico team are family to me and I know they would do anything for me and have been really good to me.  So I decided to stick with those guys and I know what they are capable of.

What is next year looking like for you?  You are signed to be a Lites rider, although with the constantly changing AMA rules on the Lites class, at one point you would have been required to move up to the 450s because you won the East Coast Lites championship in 2008 which was your rookie season.

They got that rule changed around the middle of this year, which I think is good.  I don’t think I would be ready for 450s this coming year. So yeah, I will be in a Lites bike again for this year and then 2011 will be my first year in the 450 class.

Do you know if you are going to be on the East Coast or West Coast?

I’m hoping to do West Coast.  As of right now I am training for that to be ready at Anaheim. But time will tell what will happen.

Why the preference for the West?

The West Coast definitely got the best of me last year.  I just want to go back and show myself that I can race the West Coast..

What do you have going on until January?

Just a lot of testing.  There are some little races local races in the area that I might do, but as of right now I’m just getting ready.
