Sure, Davi Millsaps’ season may have been short, but it was nothing less than incredible. The Rockstar Energy Racing team captain had a career-making run in the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross series by controlling over half of the series before an untimely injury disrupted his flow. Never one to give up, DM18 fought through the rest of the season with a bum leg and still claimed second overall in the championship standings. Looking good up front is easy, and with a number of brands putting their gear on Millsaps, we heard plenty of ONE, Bell, Dragon, Gaerne, and GoPro plugs on the podium. We hit up each of Davi’s apparel sponsors for a rundown of his kit, including the total number of each used.
HELMET: Bell Moto 9 Carbon
NUMBER OF HELMETS USED DURING SEASON: 1
Millsaps is a longtime endorser of Bell products, and his support continued in the brand’s Moto 9 offering. Rockstar sponsorship agreements mandated the helmet be a basic black finish with their iconic yellow star logos placed on both sides. Ghosted into the helmet’s paint are “DM18” logos from Millsaps’ FMF apparel line, through a process developed and applied in-house by Bell. The mandatory Eject Helmet Removal system was installed and stock small size padding was utilized. Despite having two spares in the team truck, Millsaps used just one helmet all Supercross season.
HELMET CAMERA: GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition
Millsaps was one of the numerous riders that had a GoPro camera attached to his helmet, and thanks to the powerful recorder, fans were able to see the most thrilling moments of the year from Millsaps’ point of view. GoPro carries a case of cameras to each round, and charging, recording, cleaning, and uploading are handled by a busy staff.
GOGGLES: Dragon Vendetta
PRICE: $79.95 (Goggles), $37.50 (Per 28 pack of laminated tear-offs)
NUMBER OF GOGGLES USED DURING SEASON: 119
NUMBER OF TEAR-OFFS USED DURING SEASON: 840
With Dragon Alliance being the official goggle brand of Rockstar Energy Racing, rider rep Kenny Adams was busy all season long. For a single day of racing, Adams built seven sets of goggles for Millsaps, all with clear lenses, for the day (five for each track outing, one emergency pair kept by the mechanic, and one for the podium). Each goggle was loaded with seven laminated tear-offs, except for the Daytona main event, where 14 were used. Per Rockstar Energy agreements, Millsaps used the collaboration colorway of the Vendetta frame.
JERSEY: ONE Industries Gamma
NUMBER OF JERSEYS USED DURING SEASON: 35
Millsaps’ jerseys were from ONE Industries Gamma line with the necessary logos, name, and numbers ironed onto the fabric. For most of the season, Millsaps ran a custom Rockstar colorway, a design available in ONE’s 2014 Atom line, but also had a black and white option with additional sponsorship logos. Each weekend he was presented with two sets of new gear for racing, and brought a previously worn set for practice.
GLOVE: ONE Industries Zero
NUMBER OF GLOVE SETS USED DURING SEASON: 35
ONE’s lightweight, yet durable Zero glove was Millsaps’ mitt of choice and he used them straight from the bag, with no modifications made. He was also not set to a particular color like some are, and mixed red, black, and white gloves all season long.
PANTS: ONE Industries Gamma
NUMBER OF PANTS USED DURING SEASON: 35
Millsaps’ Gamma pants were custom-made to have a 31-inch waist, proper sponsor branding in the form of TPR patches on the undersides of the thigh, and often in a custom Rockstar colorway that matched the Gamma jersey.
KNEE BRACES: Asterisk Ultra Cell
NUMBER OF BRACE SETS USED DURING SEASON: 1
Like many on the line, a pair of Asterisk Ultra Cell knee braces were worn underneath Millsaps’ pants. They supported his tweaked knee through the latter portion of the season, and like many important pieces of safety equipment, the same pair was used during the entire Supercross season.
BOOTS: Gaerne SG12
SIZE: 10.5 Custom
NUMBER OF BOOT SETS USED DURING SEASON: 1
Gaerne’s SG12 boots have long been a part of Millsaps’ ensemble, thanks to the support, protection, and durability that they offer. Need proof? The Italian brand presented Millsaps’ with a pair of custom-made boots in size 10.5 just before the Anaheim opening round and the pair was never adjusted or replaced over the course of seventeen races.
BASE LAYERS: Virus Stay Cool Compression Tech Pants and Top (on-track) | Bioceramic Energy Series Compression Pants and Top (recovery)
SIZE: Pants – Medium | Top – Large
PRICE: Stay Cool Pant – $56.50 | Stay Cool Top – $39 | Bioceramic Pants – $65.50 | Bioceramic Top – $56.50
Millsaps joined the list of athletes using Virus layers in early moments of 2013, and used the brand’s technology on the track and during recovery. To keep his body temperatures in check and improve circulation on the track, the Stay Cool Compression layers were worn as base layers. Once the night’s racing was complete, Millsaps quickly changed into the Bioceramic Energy Series layers which aids recovery.
