ESPN X Games: Moto X – Step Up

The X Games in Los Angeles were officially launched today as the boys of Moto X Step Up took over the Staples Center. The center is home to the world famous L.A. Lakers. But there was no basketball taking place as 16 dirt bikes set the stage for what promises to be an unparalleled Summer X Games.

Coming into the event, Tommy Clowers was the reigning gold medalist. Nobody had ever beaten Clowers as he has won every X Games Step Up event.

Needless to say, he had the target on his back today. During practice, a few riders looked solid including Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg and Ronnie Renner. We were sure it would be a good competition. But as things got started, Stenberg was eliminated about halfway into the comp. Another upset was last year’s bronze medalist, Brian Deegan, who had a nasty yet humorous crash well into the event. Brian landed so hard that he bounced right off his bike, did a frontward somersault and endoed headfirst into the ground. He laid there on his back looking much like a turtle when his chest protector got pushed up around his neck. He got up and went for one more attempt but failed.

The final showdown came down to Tommy Clowers and a brand new face to the X Games, Matt Buyten. (Side note: an injured Mike Metzger withdrew at the last minute to save himself for freestyle. He had a huge get-off last week and hurt his knee, arm and shoulder).

When the bar was raised to 32′ Buyten cleared it on his second attempt. Clowers pulled up the line and surprised everyone when he failed at both attempts.

Clowers took home his first silver medal in Step Up as Buyten took home his first-ever X Games medal and the biggest win of his career. Renner finished third.

The day was awesome and full of surprises and excitement. It definitely set the tone for the next two days of moto events. Stay tuned for my Moto X report coming up.
