Friday Feature: AMSOIL

There probably isn’t a motocross rider out there that hasn’t heard of AMSOIL. So we decided to take a few minutes with Jeremy Meyer, AMSOIL’s Racing Coordinator, to learn more about the company that has become a regular fixture in our sport.

Jeremy, thanks for taking some time with us. Tell us a little bit about the AMSOIL company history.

AMSOIL has been producing a full line of synthetic lubricants since 1972 in Superior, Wisconsin. Our company President and founder, Albert J. Amatuzio, was an award-winning jet fighter pilot and saw the benefits that synthetic lubricants had in the jet engines that propelled his aircraft. He began his research of synthetic lubricants in the 1960’s and established AMSOIL in 1972. AMSOIL was the first company to introduce synthetic lubricants for everyday uses.

That’s a pretty cool background. Most of us here at TWMX know AMSOIL strictly from the motorcycle side of things. What are the different products AMSOIL offers?

Since the introduction of AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in 1972 (along with its 25,000 mile drain interval recommendation), AMSOIL has gone on to develop the most complete line of synthetic lubricants and automotive products in the world. In our history, we’ve had many industry first. AMSOIL “firsts” in motor oil, two-cycle oil, gear lube, grease, air filter and oil filter technology are proof-positive of the AMSOIL commitment to innovation.

Basically, if it has moving parts, we have you covered. Our 2-stroke and 4-stroke motor oils are second to none, and our air and oil filters have introduced not-before seen technology. We offer oil filter changes at 25,000 miles and air filter changes at 100,000 miles. Plus we have a complete line of PowerSports air filters for the off-road industry. AMSOIL offers more than 100 types of lubricant, greases and filtration products and also offers metal protectors, vitamins and cleaning products.

What are some new or cool motocross-related products you guys have that we should know about?

Our motorcycle oils are the best in the business. Our 10w-40 and 20w-50 Motorcycle oils are the same oils being used by the Factory Connection team, which includes Kevin Windham and Josh Grant. Not only is it a perfect match for your engine, but it also meets API GL-1 and SAE 80W/90 and SAE 90 gear lube requirements for your bikes’ transmission.

AMSOIL recently commissioned an independent study of the top motorcycle oils on the market. AMSOIL rated at or near the top in all of the categories tested, including high temperature viscosity protection, wet clutch performance, heat resistance, corrosion protection and foam control. AMSOIL recently published these test results in a white paper that you can find on our website at

We are also offering an exceptional product for when you stop riding your bike. We recently introduced our Engine Fogging Oil. This can be used in both two and four stroke motorcycles that get put away for long periods of time, such as the long winters we see here in northern Wisconsin. During storage, water vapor can lead to surface corrosion on cylinder liners, piston rings and other internal engine parts. The AMSOIL Fogging Oil offers superior film retention, providing protection against corrosion and dry starts, which will help extend the life of your engine.

How involved are you in racing?

For the past decade AMSOIL has been heavily involved in all forms of racing. After spending time with racing legends Al and Bobby Unser, Dick Trickle and other drivers in the mid 80’s, AMSOIL returned to the grassroots level of racing in the late 1990’s. We started off in Snocross and shortly after began our long-standing relationship with Rick Ziefelder (Ziggy) and the Factory Connection team, which included Mike LaRocco. We were the title sponsor of that team up until this yyear, and we are still working heavily with them. We also are the presenting sponsor for Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Nationals, as well as a number of regional series and events in the motocross world. AMSOIL is also a sponsor of the AMA Outdoor Nationals. Canadian MX rider Marco Dube has also been a long time rider for Team AMSOIL.

We offer our Preferred Racer Program through, as well as a dealer co-op program which has more than 300 teams in all racing disciplines being sponsored with AMSOIL products. All told, AMSOIL sponsors about 50 teams and series in the U.S. and Canada.

One last question. You mentioned the dealer program, and it seems like most of us know someone who is an AMSOIL dealer. Tell us how that works.

In 1973, AMSOIL switched its marketing plan to become a Multi-Level Marketing company. AMSOIL believes that a one-on-one approach is an easier way to sell our products and to help dispel the myths of extended drain intervals. We have tens of thousands of dealers world-wide selling AMSOIL products. These independent dealers can sign-up retail and commercial accounts, sponsor race teams, work trade shows and advertise their business as they see fit. Any person can become an AMSOIL Dealer and sell our products. We have a growing number of dealers that are using the racing community as a sales opportunity. A lot of teams in the amateur ranks have become AMSOIL Dealers and are now selling our products directly to race teams at the track. We offer our every possible tool and advantage to successfully sell AMSOIL.

Thanks again, Jeremy.
