Giant Killer: Moto XXX rider Damon Huffman gets off to a great start in Anaheim

For more than eight years now, Moto XXX riders have been doing their best “David vs. Goliath” impressions at AMA Supercross and motocross races on a regular basis. After finishing second at a World Supercross GP round last month, Damon Huffman got 2004 off to a great start at Anaheim Saturday night.

“Huff Daddy” suffered a minor setback when he was taken out from behind in his heat race, but bounced back and transferred out of his semifinal. He gated well in the main event, starting in the top ten and battling early with factory stars Mike LaRocco, Kevin Windham and Grant Langston among others. Riding very consistently, Huffman settled into a fast pace, never falling out of the top ten. As the laps wore on and other riders showed signs of fatigue, the #20 Moto XXX Honda seemed to speed up. In the late stages, Huffman passed factory star Kevin Windham and held off Ezra Lusk to finish a solid seventh.

That strong ride was significant in many ways. First of all, it vaulted Damon into third place in the THQ World Supercross GP standings, only ten points out of first. Anyone who has spent much time around the sport of Supercross can tell you that the first few rounds of the season are the most difficult to achieve solid results in. It¿s a time when nearly everyone is healthy and there are more factory supported riders than there are spots in the main events. Succeeding in such a competitive environment is very encouraging.

When asked how he felt about the results, Huffman was both pleased and optimistic. “I¿m happy with the way things went tonight”, he said. “The bike is good and I felt good. I actually felt like I was getting faster as the race went on. I started gaining on some of the guys in front of me in the last few laps, so I know that I¿m on the pace. It¿s good to finally race with all of the top riders and see that I¿ve got the speed and equipment to produce great results. I¿m looking forward to keeping it rolling and improving every week”.

Huffman and Moto XXX will be swinging for the fences this weekend at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Arizona, where round 2 of the AMA Supercross series takes place.
