During a recent conversation with Brock Sellards, we happened to mention 15-year-old Michael LaPaglia’s name, and Brock told us, “Michael is going to be a threat when he jumps into Supercross. His skills through the whoops are unbelievable. He’s got everything behind him that he needs–big size, good form, and he’s going to surprise more people than anybody else coming up.”

Fortunately, Michael doesn’t have to look farther than his backyard (which houses a Supercross track that Brock built large portions of) for a place to practice. Of course, having a private Supercross track in your backyard ensures you’ll get plenty of visitors who provide a constant source of inspiration. Michael told us, “I get to ride with guys like Brock, Danny Smith, and Nathan Ramsey. It’s really cool hanging out with all those guys. I think I enjoy riding outdoors more, but I think it’s pretty cool how not many amateur kids can get around a Supercross track like I can. I like the wide open stuff, but I do like Supercross.”

Michael got his first taste of two-wheeled action early, riding BMX when he was two or three years old, and for 2004 he’ll continue his progression through the amateur ranks. “I’ll be riding 125 and 250B, Stock and Mod; and Schoolboy, Stock and Mod. In 2005 I’ll move up to A, and in 2006, I’ll be ready for Anaheim.”

Of course, all amateurs aspire to having a good pro career, and possibly winning a National or Supercross championship, but Michael has an additional goal. “I thought that was the coolest thing when I heard Ricky Carmichael went out and waxed Stefan Everts. One of my long-term goals is to be on a winning Motocross des Nations team. That’d be cool.”
