LaRocco Wins Opening Night of THQ U.S. Open Carmichael’s Winning Streak Stopped

Team Honda’s Mike LaRocco of South Bend,Ind., won the opening night of racing at the THQ U.S. Open inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Two-time defending THQ U.S. Open champion Ricky Carmichael, who has a four-moto win streak going into tonight, crashed on lap five and remounted near the end of the pack. He went on to finish fifth.

Carmichael earned the holeshot followed by LaRocco and Ernesto Fonseca. On lap five Carmichael spun out in a turn, relinquishing the lead to LaRocco. Team Yamaha’s Tim Ferry of Dade City, Fla., and Michael Byrne of Lake Elsinore, Calif., worked their way through the pack to finish second andthird, respectively.

“I was following Carmichael and he lost his front end in the corner,” said LaRocco on his first THQ U.S. Open win. “Carmichael was down for a while because he was having a hard time starting his bike. Once I went into the lead, I rode smooth and kept a consistent pace.”
