Malcolm Smith CPSC Lead Ban Protest

Malcolm Smtih is a pioneer in our sport.  He has done more things on a motorcycle than most have ever dreamed possible; a jack of all trades and a renaissance man who never let anything get in his way.  Today he just pushed the boundaries again, this time though, it was off of the motorcycle.  In an act of defiance, and in protest or the CPSC/CPSIA Lead Ban (which brought the sales of all motorcycles and ATVs designed for kids 12 and under to an abrupt halt on February 10, 2009), Malcolm gathered industry friends and fans to watch as he sold three banned vehicles to willing customers.  But the customers were not just random walk-ins, they were moto legends Jeff Ward, Troy Lee, and Glen Helen promoter Bud Feldkamp.

In front of a packed house at Malcolm Smith Motorsports, the proprietar received checks for each motorcycle, showing that the motorcycle industry is not going to accept this new ban sitting down.  It was a proactive event that allowed all in attendance to have their voices heard.  Check out the photo gallery, and be sure to visit the links below to learn more about the Lead Ban and what you can do to change it.

About damn time the industry bands together, hell we all band together and do something about this political crap meant to end our sport and use of public land

  • Gary Renko Says:

I don’t know where to start. What our government is doing is criminal. Put aside the fact kids can’t buy bikes to ride. This will put business owners out of business and their employees out of work. The government talks everday about creating jobs but yet the pass a bill like this without thinking it through. We need to clean house in washington. What Malcolm did today is heroic.

  • D676 Says:

Yeah, this is getting insane. Ive allready sent a few letters and signed countless petitions trying to get this stupid law overturned. My kids are just about the right age to start getting into the best sport around

  • moto586 Says:

    i hear u there
im young and only 21 and i want my kids to ride when im old so just let them ride

  • Anonymous Says:

that ban is just ridiculous kids have been able to ride in the past why not now

  • Homeskillet Says:

I don’t even think that the politicians thought of motorcycles when this lead law was written. Any reasonable person knows that kids dont go around putting motorcycles in their mouth like they would a small toy or other object that may contain traces of lead. It seems that motorcycles have been lumped in to this category by means of a technicality. I’m confidant that Malcolms’ efforts will bring awareness to this fact and an addendum to the law can be written so that sales can resume. Good job Malcolm. Keep up the good work.

Bayodome, Transworld should have a constant reminder on its webpage to have all riders contact their US Representatives and Senators on this issue, as well as the CPSC. This is a serious threat to the sport. If you are not allowed to have new riders under age 12 coming into the sport we are in big trouble. Virtually every rider today started riding before they were 12 years old. This ban would prohibit young riders from participating. I commend Malcolm Smith for taking a lead position given the ridiculous application of this law.

  • scott Says:

Awsome I think I have signes about 20 petitions so far and I will keep signing them until the government fixes this crap!!!!!!

  • DBlack Says:

It sure is nice to see those at the upper echelon of our sport really set an example for our industry and the world. I am truly thankful that we have people like this in our sport. The motocross community is a tight nit group of people and definitely the kind of folks I would like to see my son grow up around.

I am not sure if those guys end up reading much on these forums but if they do, I would like to personally offer my thanks from our family to Malcolm, Jeff, Troy, Bud and anyone else that was involved in this stand up event.

Thanks again for standing up for our sport!

  • moore277 Says:

  • migs Says:

I swear, if this ban doesn’t get lifted by the time i have a kid, I’m moving to canada.

  • rodney Says:

I remember my PW days very fondly…those bastards.

  • Jake511 Says:

This is an awesome kick start to one of several needed rebellions. “We the people” ARE the government! The clowns in public office answer to us and we control them; how that got upside down is beyond me. I am proud of you Mr. Smith- well done, Sir.

  • Chris Says:

Good call! I put up a link on the top front page in the Quick Hits section. Hopefully that helps.

    skinny

  • Mike Loughery Says:

I’m from Canada and we’ve had to deal with politicians trying to push this matter for a few years. But we did win. Kids are allowed to ride kid-sized vehicles. As long as there is adult who attended an approved weekend safety course.
    This, I’m cool with.
I hope that your petitions/rallies/events knock some since into your politicians as it did here up north.
    Good luck!!!!

  • JW381 Says:

We all owe Malcolm a lot. Not just for this, but for everything he’s done for our sport. A true legend, showing what he’s made of, even at the ripe age of 68.

  • cr94 Says:

this is bs i live in Canada but i feel bad for u guys

  • Durham105 Says:

That’s a little dumb that you can buy some lead fishing sinkers but you can’t buy a dirt bike..

  • Codee Says:

  • FOFIF Says:

LET THOSE WHO RIDE DECIDE! DONT TELL ME WHAT MY KIDS CAN AND CANT DO. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE BOYS!

  • CRrider94 Says:

i agree that they should have thought about motorcycles, which im sure they didnt.. but you ppl are imbeciles… in the fall of 2009 the 5 major off road motorcycle manufacturors are going to have all new, 2010 mini lines.. and they are all going to be lead free… ok? your kids will be able to ride… just shut up and wait till the 2010 models come out.. theyre not going to stop making them, they are going to change.. just like car manufacturers, when the pass more strict emission laws, they dont stop making friggin cars, they juts put a better cat back on it… this is the same, theyre not going to stop making bikes you freakin idiots.. they are going to make lead free biikes!!!!!!

  • GRKrider Says:

This law is a complete JOKE. These legislators don’t know the first thing about a dirt bike yet alone what is doing to the motorcycle inductry. Riding dirt bikes is all about riding with your buddies and your family. This law takes this opportunity away form future participants.

Every motorcycle dealership should follow in Malcolm’s footsteps and start selling these banned bikes immediatly. This law is so RIDICULOUS. These politicians need to get there act together fast.

  • rider 1 Says:

    Right on!

  • Homeskillet Says:

    Excellent point.

  • reedfan Says:

Yeah you got that right , I started riding a mx dirt bike two troke when I turned 6 years old And you know what! I’m 100% healthy then and now and continously ride a 450f today and feel great!

  • reedfan Says:

Politions……….When these men were kids long ago when Christmas rolled around and saw a new mini dirt bike under the tree the world was just like heaven.
Now all grown up men and thier sons and daughters too Now they feel to make a law like that! Not cool at all folks.

  • Anonymous Says:

because u didnt eat the plastics guy.

  • Ryry444 Says:

The problem is the politicians do not really care. At this point there is no money or benefit for them to hurry along with this. Elections just finished and with the shift to the left we’re experiencing its only going to get worse. Nancy Pelosi probably loves the side effect of this law. At this point I think every dealership in the country should put all bikes back out for sale and let the politicians try to shut every store down!

  • motoman_28 Says:

    or the motor…

  • motoman_28 Says:

instructions tell you to BITE the LEAD sinker. Nothing wrong with that I guess. If we could only stop kids from biting dirtbikes…

  • Anonymous Says:

its not like the kid would start biting the chain.

  • Marni Says:

I applaud Malcolm Smith for this! The whole law needs to be fixed, but unfortunately the stay-at-home mothers, used book sellers, and librarians the law also affects do not have the money to back them that these men do. Thanks for getting the word out!!!

  • Smout Says:

Stupidest thing I have ever heard of, would ruin the sport!

  • Anonymous Says:

the reason they extended the lead policy to motorcycles is so that the next generation wont ride crushing the sport therefor they will be able to close down off road parks, sand dunes… etc.

  • mx404NJ Says:

im glad somone took a stand and sold a few bikes! to all the other dealers that are out there go ask the gov for a bail out cuz they are putting smaller dealers out of buisness. im only 21 but i own my own house an have 2 kids that are about to start riding there better damn well be a dealer to sell me 2 brand new bikes.

  • Jamaica MX Says:

Looks like America isn’t really a free country… Harsh statement, i admit. I cannot fathom the amazing things that children will miss out on because of this ban (if it remains, and i pray it does not).

    Keep the kids riding!

  • maddogg Says:

the motorcycle industry was asleep @the wheel….just like our govt was w/all this housing market b.s….. i hope the ban stays…..maybe the manufacturers will wake up….. may be they dont give a crap, maybe the 2010 minibike line will be leadfree…. i’m sick to death of all this b.s. goin on and nobody does anything till its to late….. WAKE UP FOLKS!!!! BE PROACTIVE…NOT REACTIVE

  • angus199 Says:

this is bull what are they going to do next take cars away???!!!!!!!!

  • JonR Says:

Looks good and nice job! That should get some additional responses to Congress and the CPSC to let them know how we feel.

  • Carlos Says:

    Sorry about your family Bud

  • onekickg450 Says:

What a bunch of horse shit. But if something needs to be done a the very least make it mandatory to buy all the gear for the kids when they purchase a new bike. Dont punish them completely, hell ciggerets are known for a fact to kill and they are still for sale. I guess as long as our wonderfull gov. gets a big enough kick back for taxs they will still sell ciggs. well guess what? kids can still get ciggs.from somewhere im sure they will get the bikes as well.

  • P. Barcia Says:

Hello everyone, I know where this is going! The problem is not the lead but instead is the fact the people start riding motorcycles and ATVs and a very young age, and for a lot of people out there who dislikes motorcycles this is the PLAN A to eliminate riding as a recreational activity. Who hasn’t had a complaint that people ride their motorized ATV or motorcycle on state property or eve in their own backyards, which it makes illegal, but guess what when we buy a motorcycle or ATV we pay taxes, right? People have even registered their machines at the DMV, so that should make it “legal”, where I’m going with these few words is: by eliminating youth riding eventually will eliminate RIDING until extinction, is that what motorcycle’s enthusiasts want? I DON’T THINK SO!
Lets be UNITED and together we CAN do it. WE SHARE THE SAME PASSION, DON’T LET SOME ONE ELSE TAKE OVER IT!

    Ride Safe

  • Durham105 Says:

i would like to see a congressman go to a mx race and find 1 kid bitting their dirtbike..
