McGrath wins Mammoth

Seven-time SX Champion Jeremy McGrath won the 125 and 250cc classes at the 34th Annual Mammoth MX, but the Mazda Yamaha rider was denied a clean sweep of t he pro classes by wily veteran Doug Dubach, who won the Open Pro division.

A break in the AMA 125/250cc National Championship Series saw several factory support riders show up for the popular race held in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but none were able to challenge Dubach or McGrath.

Mounted on a YZ250F four-stroke, McGrath took the lead early on in the 125cc main event and scored a comfortagle in ahead of Dr. D, also mounted on a YZ250F. Team SplitFire’s Andrew Short upheld two-stroke honor with a third-place finish, but it was yet another thumper – ridden by big boy Supd Walters – that nabbed fourth. Fifth was former 125cc National Champion Steve Lamson, aboard a Husqvarna that was visibly down on power on the long, treacherous Mammoth uphill.

In the 250cc main the story was much the same, with MC leading early on and scoring a comfortable win over Dubach. This time, McGrath was mounted on a two-stroke YZ250, while Dubach rode his trusty YZ426F. Third went to NorCal hero Tim Mertens abaord a big blue thumper, while four-placed Short proved that he can ride a 250cc almost as well as a 125.

In the Open Pro class, a lack of entries forced promoters to run a two-moto format instead of qualifiers and a main event. Dubach was untouchable in both motos and won going away. But what about MC? The King of SX suffered a poor start on his YZ426F in the first moto and was set back even further when he fell over at the bottom of the downhill. He would eventually finish fourth, but he was nowhere near as fast as Dubach. In the second moto, McGrath pulled off on the fourth lap with a claimed flat rear tire. At the time, he was running fourth behind Dubach, Walters and Mertens, who passed him with an aggressive stuff in the horseshoe. Walters was runner-up in both motos.

With two second-place finishes and one win, Dubach emerged the top pro rider on the weekend… not bad for a rider who is rapidly approaching Senior class eligibility!
