Monday Kickstart Presented by One Industries – Daytona SX

Racing at the Daytona Supercross by Honda is in the record books, and the action we saw at the legendary speedway was exciting, to say the least. The race was broadcast live on Speed for all to enjoy, but here’s some of the stuff that happened behind the scenes. Enjoy…

The pits at Daytona were a little bit different from any of the rounds so far this season. With the race being held inside the Daytona Speedway, all the teams set up shop inside these garages.

Since the beginning of the season, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Blake Baggett has been constantly improving on his results. Only three rounds into the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites series, Baggett found the top spot on the podium. After winning the first heat of the night, Baggett grabbed the holeshot in the main, and checked out. It was a solid ride from the Pro Circuit rider, and with 65 points, he is now only four points behind Geico Powersport Honda's Justin Barcia.

Not only was it a big night for Blake, it was a huge night for his family, too. Moments after the race, Blake's dad was already on the phone and spreading the news.

Each lap he barely made it over the top by a couple of inches, but this line did help him pull away from his competition.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Dean Wilson was off to a good start during the day by coming out on top in the first qualifier, and a second place finish in his heat race. Once the main started, though, he ran into some troubles right from the beginning. When he came around mechanic's row on the first lap, we spotted him pushing down his clutch lever. He went on to finish the main with an eighth place, and he's now nine points behind the series leader, Justin Barcia.

Unlike most of the Supercross opening ceremonies, Daytona stayed away from the laser light shows and long video intros. Instead, Ryan Villopoto, Andrew Short, James Stewart, Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, and Trey Canard rode through this inflatable tunnel filled with fog, and onto the track.

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Ryan Dungey was leading the first few laps of his heat race, but he ended up with a DNF when his bike started to spew oil. During the press conference, Dungey said he wasn't sure what caused the problem. All he was able to say was that he started to hear some noises coming from his motor, and he immediately pulled off.

Towards the end of the race, Red Bull KTM's Mike Alessi was given the blue flag while he was in ninth place. When he looked back, he saw James Stewart and moved out of the way. What he didn't know, though, was that Stewart had crashed earlier in the race, and he wasn't actually lapping him. Alessi went on to let Stewart by, but he didn't know he was losing a position by doing that.

The Alpinstars Tech 2 boot is made for ATV and mini-bike riding, but it's now becoming a common boot for mechanics when they are at the races. These boots allow a good range of motion, and most of the mechanics like that when they are trying to pack the line for dirt starts.

The start in Daytona didn't have a long straight, but it did have a pretty big hump at the beginning of the left hand turn. There were mixed opinions between the riders of whether they liked it or not, but it did allow for some close holeshots.

After Ryan Dungey's bike let go while leading his heat race, the entire Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki team pitched in to get a new engine installed in the number-one machine. They made it with minutes to spare before the LCQ, which Dungey went out and easily won. Kudos to the team, which performed the "bike surgery" with precision and speed.
