With the conclusion of Sunday’s National at Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin, NY, came the official halfway mark of the 2006 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship series. Yep, six of 12 races are now in the books, and it’s Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto who sit in the driver’s seats of their prospective championship points races. With overall wins at five of the first six rounds, RC has begun opening a commanding lead (44pts) over Chad Reed for the Motocross-class National title. Villopoto, on the other hand, has claimed four of six overalls in the Lites class, and thanks to the points collected during his 2-1 performance yesterday in New York, the young Kawi phenom narrowly slid by early series points leader Mike Alessi. And though both riders have established themselves as the guys to beat (RC winning the last five in a row, and Villopoto with three straight to his name), there’s still plenty of good racing ahead, and anything can happen!
