Monster Energy/FAR/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Scott Watkins Takes Second in GNCC at Morganton

Monster Energy/FAR/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Scott Watkins earned his first podium finish of the year in the XC2 class during the third round of the GNCC in Morganton, N.C.

After finishing last round just shy of the podium, Watkins was ready to prove his speed aboard his KX„¢250. He started in ninth-place off the line, and by the time the checkered flag dropped, he came across the finish in third-place.

“I got off the line further back than I wanted and passes were extremely difficult to make,” said Watkins. “It took me a while to get though the pack and once I caught up to third, the leaders were gone. Overall, I’m really happy with my finish.”

Teammate Cole Calkins put in an impressive ride despite having to ride with blistered hands still healing from the first two rounds. At the start, Calkins shot off the line, earning the holeshot. Unfortunately, his hands proved to be too much to overcome and caused him to use all his strength just finishing the two and a half hour race. He went on to finish eighth.

“I did all I could to hold on,” said Calkins. “Thankfully my KX„¢250F along with the Pro Circuit-powered engine helped me get the holeshot. I was unhappy that I wasn’t able to ride to my full potential with my hands not ready yet. The three week break before the next round is just what they need to heal.”

Racing in his hometown, Monster Energy/Far/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Jesse Robinson came into round three with high expectations in the XC1 class. On the first lap, Robinson slammed his foot on a rock, which limited his ability to make a charge toward the front. He rode through the pain to finish with a solid eighth-place result.

“I fought through the pain for my family and friends, but breaking my toes on the first lap made it difficult for me to do any better,” said Robinson. “I got a lot left in me and I can’t wait until the next round.”

Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green amateur rider Andrew Matusek continued his winning ways by picking up his third-consecutive victory in the 250F A class. Along with the victory, Matusek impressed his fellow riders when he caught up to the leaders of the XC2 class, who start three to four minutes before the amateur classes.

“It would have been a personal accomplishment if I would have caught the XC2 guys but the heat finally got to me so I backed down,” said Matusek. “The victory in my class still feels really good.”

The Monster Energy/FAR/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team heads to Union, S.C., on April 14, for round four of the GNCC East Coast Series.
