CARLSBAD, Calif., (Feb. 12, 2007) — Monster Energy-backed Ryan Villopoto (Pro Circuit/Kawasaki) took another giant step toward clinching the overall AMA Western Region Lites class championship this past weekend in Houston, winning the Lites main event in come-from-behind fashion in front of nearly 50,000 fans at Reliant Stadium, Round Six of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
With the win Villopoto now leads Jason Lawrence by 34 points for the overall championship, 147-113. A win this weekend in San Diego, or a poor performance by Lawrence, would clinch the title for the young Washington native prior to the series’ final Western Regional Lites championship round in Seattle (April 28th).
Said Villopoto on his $1,000 Progressive Direct holeshot: “The start was tight, I was lucky to have the fastest bike out there.
With Lawrence tight on his rear tire after the start, the No. 1 and No. 2 riders in the series got into a pretty aggro battle, trading the lead briefly early in the race, then having Lawrence take the lead when Villopoto was unable to avoid a downed rider. The points leader was able to right himself and take off after Lawrence, catching him within three laps then putting seven seconds on his rival for good measure.
“It’s racing, said Villopoto of the banging incident with Lawrence. “I did go wide on that turn and left it open for him. But nothing more I can say about it. We’re going for a championship here next week in San Diego.
Finishing 9th on the evening was Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Chris Gosselaar. Gosselaar is in 5th place in the overall Lites class standings.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round Seven of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. Last year Villopoto finished 5th at San Diego.
