CORONA, Calif., (June 20, 2007) — In a first for Monster Energy, off road race legend Robby Gordon will run a Monster-wrapped Ford Fusion stock car at this weekend’s NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Gordon, who’s one of the premier off road racers Monster Energy backs through out the Paris/Dakar, SCORE and CORR off road series events, has convinced officials at Monster to ‘jump into the deep end’ at this weekend’s Sonoma round of the NASCAR/Nextel Cup — with Monster Energy sponsoring Gordon’s ride from bumper to bumper, as well as plastering Gordon from his helmet to fireproof shoes with Monster’s iconic green and black glowing M-claw logo.
“I’ve been with Monster Energy for some time now and this couldn’t be a better weekend in the NASCAR season for them to test the waters as a full-on sponsor for the weekend, said Gordon. “We’ve had a lot of success here at Sonoma in the past and I want Monster energy to be very much a part of what we hope will be continued success this weekend.
Gordon won his second Nextel Cup Series race at Sonoma in 2003 and has scored two additional top ten finishes (’00 and ’01) in the nine times he’s competed in Cup cars at Infineon Raceway.
“Monster Energy and Robby have an outstanding relationship forged through off road racing from Paris to the sands of northern Africa and the shores of Baja Mexico, said Monster Energy’s Joe Parsons. “The aggressive nature of Monster Energy Drink is epitomized in the effort Robby puts into his craft — be it off road, open wheel or NASCAR racing. So when he approached us with the title sponsorship position at Sonoma this weekend — especially given his history at Infineon Raceway— we were revved up to jump on board.
In addition to being one of the pre-race favorites, Gordon and his Monster Energy/Ford Cup car will also run the DIRECTV “Hot Pass camera on channel 798 — for those fans with DIRECTV. This feature includes real time stats, live audio, three camera views and dedicated announcers the entire Monster Energy/Gordon Sonoma effort.
