Motocross Des Teams (MXDT)

Presented by: Universal Motocross
Co-sponsored by: Eastpak, Twin Air, European B/MX Connection, Paul’s Boutique.
Place: Circuit Mac De Helm, Helmond, The Netherlands
Date: Wednesday 29 September 2004

Purpose: Create a possibility for (American) motocross fans to form a team and personally enter a 2 hour relay-team race on Wednesday before the Motocross Des Nations race that is taking place in Lierop, The Netherlands on the weekend of 2/3 October 2004.

Expected interest: 15 ¿ 30 teams. Teams exist of 1 team manager, 3 riders and possibly a ¿Wildcard¿ rider. Maximum number of bikes per team: 3. Motor caliber: 125cc or higher. There will be raced in one class only. Participants need to own a FIM or KNMV license or can sign up for a daily insurance pass (at 15 Euros) because of insurance reasons. No insurance pass means no riding.

Sign up: By pre-registration. Communication will be done through the Team Managers. Start numbers for the teams will be announced in advance. That way they can be prepared for the front of the bike and the right side of every team bike. Color of numbers and backgrounds is free. As long as it¿s clear to read.

Every team gets allocated their own spot in the paddock. That way everyone can see who is in what team and it¿s easy to contact team members. Signs will be made with the team members and their team number and will be placed at the spot in the paddock. Next to the team spots, also spots will be reserved for press, sponsors, police, ambulance and staff.

The start area will be divided in slots (1 ¿ 30). This is where the rider who is going to ride next will prepare him/herself. By passing on a wristband, the next rider will be sent into the track. In this area it is only allowed to ride in first gear. This is to reduce the speed. When you leave this area you can shift up.

The start of the race will look something like this: The team managers have the wrist bands with their team number marked on it. They will be placed roughly 30 yards from the riders. After the start they run towards their first rider to pass on the wristband.

The finish will be like this. After 2 hours have passed, there will be one more final lap. The team who did most laps wins.

Every rider can ride a maximum of 15 minutes at once. The wristband needs to be passed on before 15 minutes have passed. If this does not happen the team will be punished by one position per violation.

The area at the main entrance will be reserved for promotion stands and sponsors of the race. The main area is also where the public enters the track area. No cover charge.

All information will be put up on a website (www.universalmotocross.com). Participants, team managers and those interested can find all race info 24hrs/day on this site. Also the teams who have signed up will be added to the website including their race number. An E-mail address will be posted for further questions.

Promotion for the race will be done through the website, several (MX) magazines, MX dealers, the participating teams and local newspapers.

Entry fee per team: 80 Euro, to be paid in cash on the day of the race at the registration booth.

This includes:

  • 3 paddock vehicle passes for the team
  • Reserved spot in the paddock
  • Placement of 3 company banners on the track
  • Spot of 10 feet X 10 feet in the sponsor area for company product promotion
  • Receipt of participation

The race can be used to get in touch with the media. The race can be used to test new product. The race can be used to meet new distributors and dealers. The race must be used to have a good time, that¿s the most important thing.

First team to sign up receives Number 1. Next team reives number 2. Etc. Team 1 will get the best spot in the paddock and the best spot on the starting grit. Team 2 has second best conditions, etc. There are only 30 spots available.

Teams: Several companies/media will be contacted to form a team. Some of these companies will be based in the USA. These teams will be looking out for bikes to ride the 2 hour team race. If possible 2 bikes per team. These bikes can:

  1. Be arranged by the team¿s European MX connections through distributors, dealers, friends.
  2. Be spare bikes of teams/dealers who are willing to lend the bikes for a day.
  3. Be 2005 test models supplied by manufacturers.

If all these options fail, we have the following solution: We will have individuals sign up who are willing to share their bikes with a team. This means that the rider and his bike get ¿adopted¿ for the team race. The individual rider will be put in touch with the team manager before the race so arrangements can be made between the ¿adopted¿ rider and the USA team members.

The Track & Race system:

The Mac De Helm motocross track is semi hard packed. It will help the goons stay upright as real Dutch sand circuits (like Lierop) are tough on man and machine. The track has 19 turns and 10 obstacles ranging from rollers, table tops and one small double that amateurs like us can jump and feel like we¿re the real deal. Some of the turns will be sandy enough to open the bike up and wheelie out of it once the rear wheel hits the hard packed sand.

The start of the 2 hour Le Mans style race will be as follows. Team managers have the team wrist bands and will run to the first rider of the team once the start sign is given, to hand it over. Once the armband is delivered, the first rider leaves on the start section of the track. Once the first rider is tired, or ready to hand over the wristband, he enters the changing section of the track (near the start) to pass on the special wristband to the next rider etc. The team who does most laps wins the race. Cheating will be punished.

Location/directions track MXDT, Helmond, The Netherlands:

The Mac De Helm track is located in the South of Helmond, South of the Industrial part of town.

From the South: To get there from the A67-E34 Eindhoven-Venlo freeway, take exit Helmond/Someren (N266). Head towards Helmond along the water, going north. Once you enter Helmond, take a right at the first light and cross the bridge. You¿re now on the Vossenbeemd road. After 200 meters take a right on the Beemdweg (at the yellow car sign). Keep driving until you see the gate of the Mac De Helm track at the end of the sand road. Take a quick left and an immediate right to get to the Parc fermee which is in the far back of the track. If you¿re entering the race, look for your allocated team spot in the pits that corresponds with your racing number on your bike.
