Each month, the staff at TransWorld Business flips through the three main motocross-based publications ( Racer X, Motocross Action, and TWMX), tally the stats of editorial coverage and ads, and award points for mentions and photo spreads. Photo spreads and edit features are of course worth more, and the final points total determines who was that month’s most popular rider. Here is their full report, courtesy of Stephen Hemphill and Mike Lewis…
After a strong start to 2013 season, Ryan Dungey takes the top spot for the second month in a row and extends his lead thanks to strong editorial coverage and ads from his major sponsors such as KTM and Fox. While Justin Barcia holds onto second place, James Stewart, a rider that is no stranger to the Exposure-Meter, sits right behind him in third. Stewart made a large jump into the top three, thanks to ads in each magazine, a feature and the cover of TransWorld Motocross.
Moto legends Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath used strong editorial coverage to crack the top ten and improve their Exposure-Meter standings. Marvin Musquin, Davi Millsaps, and Carey Hart were other notable names that jumped into the top twenty, while strong riders like Mike Alessi and Chad Reed slipped from contention.
While Dungey seems to be off to a commanding lead, stay tuned to see if the likes of Ryan Villopoto, Eli Tomac, or Stewart can catch up and take the top spot.
Dungey Gets ‘Er Done
Ryan Dungey had another strong month thanks to solid results and Rider of the Year accolades from Racer X. James Stewart scored big with a cover and edit feature in TransWorld Motocross, while Ricky Carmichael and Carey Hart had big edit month thanks to editorial features focusing on their new partnership.
Ryan Dungey used large ads by Fox and KTM to stay on top of the Ad Meter. Not far behind is last year’s Overall Exposure-Meter champion, Ryan Villopoto, who continues to see support from Volcom, Pro Circuit, and additional sponsors. Other riders using ads to score big are Davi Millsaps, Travis Pastrana, and Marvin Musquin.
Dunlop Does It Again
Dunlop has already started to stretch its lead over brands such as Alpinestars, who sits twenty points behind in second place. Honda leads the bike race with Kawasaki and KTM not far behind. The energy drink battle is tight with Monster just points ahead of Red Bull.
Basher Extends Lead
Motocross Action Magazine’s John Basher is a busy man and leads all other photographers in the Photo Exposure-Meter race. Simon Cudby from Racer X had a solid month and bagged yet another cover. Also, TransWorld Motocross’s Donn Maeda had a big month thanks to a cover and feature.
Carmichael And Roczen Climb Onto Podium
James Stewart may have maintained his stranglehold on the top spot in Moto’s Athlete Index, but Ricky Carmichael and Ken Roczen are mounting a social media charge. Carmichael counted nearly 158k in online interactions to move into 2nd and Ken Roczen logged over 145k to grab 3rd.
Ryan Dungey also had a good month, climbing one into the 5th spot and Dean Wilson climbed three into 7th. While there were no new faces in the top ten through February, Marvin Musquin logged over 50k to get the 10th spot for February alone.
