Portuguese plastics manufacturer Polisport is sponsoring the National Motocross and Supercross Champion, Hugo Santos, to compete in three rounds of the 2006 SX Tour. The first one was Barcelona SX, where Santos finished 13th on the SX1 class. Next weekend he will be in Geneva SX and the weekend after in Grenoble SX.
At the same time Hugo Santos is starting to race for Team LF Sport, and changed from Honda to Yamaha. Despite some lack of training with the new bike, because of the bad whether conditions in Portugal during the past weeks, the Portuguese rider is enjoying all this new experiences: "I’m very happy with the new team and the Yamaha YZF 450. The bike is just great and with some settings that we are working, it will be perfect for me. We were at BUD Racing to prepare the suspensions and they did a very good work", said Hugo Santos.
With no championships in Portugal during the winter, Team LF Sport spoke with Polisport to get support in order to enter some races of the SX Tour. For Polisport the international market is the most important and the Portuguese brand sponsors the MX World Championship and several European and American teams, so, why not to sponsor the Portuguese champion for international races?
Like that it’s possible for Hugo Santos to be riding the SX Tour, and he is very happy for it: "It’s a very good way to enter in my new team, LF Sport, and thanks to Polisport, that is sponsoring us, we can compete in such a great championship like the SX Tour. This is a complete new experience for me and it’s just great. I’m not used to this kind of tracks, short and very technical, and the level of the riders is so good! I really need this kind of races to improve my level and learn new things. My goal is to qualify for the finals and do my best. In Barcelona I was a bit nervous and still getting used to the Yamaha, but I went to the final and finished 13th. In the next races I hope to do it better".
Hugo Santos has 20 Portuguese MX and SX titles and he completely dominated the MX1 and SX1 classes on the past four years. Is international experience is small, but in 2005 we went to Hangtown race of the AMA Motocross Championship, qualified with no problems and almost entered in the points. In 2005 he also qualified for the Portuguese MX1 GP.
For 2007 the he wants to win again the Portuguese MX and SX championships and compete in many races as possible on other countries, if possible also some GPs. Hugo Santos is now 24 years old and is dream is to be part of the MX World Championship in the future.
