In what was possibly one of the best races of the year, the first Jacksonville Supercross had some great racing in both classes. Near perfect conditions greeted riders and fans alike for the new round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series. The rain from earlier in the week was no where to be seen as blue skies, and what James Stewart would later go on to say was the best dirt he has ever raced on, created a great environment for some excellent racing. Although the turnout was a little on the light side, the racing, weather, and enthusiasm are sure to return to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium next year. Please read below to find out what happened in racing, be sure to check back tomorrow for Monday Kickstart.
Lites Heat 1
Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM’s Wil Hahn used the power of his Austrian-made machine to take the holeshot followed by Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/JLaw Racing rider for the day, Tyler Wharton. On lap two, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki sophomore Austin Stroupe had worked his way up front and passed Hahn in a quick left-hand bowl turn. About one lap later, Stroupe fell while going through the first turn section dropping far back, which put Hahn back into the lead. In the later laps, Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Nico Izzi and Suzuki City’s Steven Clarke were fighting for the second spot for several laps after making their way around Wharton. By the final lap, Hahn led Izzi by about six seconds, showing that his practice speed was not a fluke, while further back Stroupe had managed to work his way back into qualifying position. At the finish it was an ecstatic Hahn who took the win aboard his orange machine.
1. Wil Hahn
2. Nico Izzi
3. Steven Clarke
4. Tyler Wharton
5. Spencer Daily
6. Jason Thomas
7. Cody Gillmore
8. Matt Goerke
9. Austin Stroupe
Lites Heat 2
Right off the start, newly crowned East Coast Lites champion Christophe Pourcel had nabbed the holeshot and led for the first lap. However, he stalled his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki machine shortly thereafter, which quickly dropped him outside of the top 10. Geico Powersports/Honda’s Blake Wharton inherited the lead from Pourcel, and was followed closely by Division 7/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Darryn Durham and Moto Concepts’ Vince Friese. Somehow, within another lap, Pourcel had already made his way back into qualifying position, proving why he was able to capture the 2009 title one round early. By the end of the third lap, Division Seven/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Broc Tickle had made his way up to third and passed Friese. Wharton continued on to take the win, although he apparently didn’t see the checkered flag as he continued to go another lap at race speed. Perhaps the extra practice could not hurt his chances for the main.
1. Blake Wharton
2. Darryn Durham
3. Broc Tickle
4. Vince Friese
5. Daniel Blair
6. Christophe Pourcel
7. Josh Lichtle
8. Dennis Jonon
9. Matt Lemoine
Lites LCQ
After taking over the lead shortly after the holeshot, Canidae/Motosport/Kawasaki rider and former East Coast Lites champion, Branden Jesseman went on to take the win almost entirely uncontested.

April 5th, 2009 at 8:15 am
ya and tyler wharton
April 5th, 2009 at 9:08 am
grant fell in the whoops right in front of me. crawled off the track holding his arm/wrist. izzi didnt come up short at all.the bike came out from under him and his body came up short.both carmichael and alessi confirmed to me that he broke his heel.
April 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Way to go K DUB!
April 5th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Wheres lawrence now? hahahaha
April 5th, 2009 at 11:26 am
i dont see how ppl can complainand say that stewart is bad for the sport. When was the last time points were this close? its been a while, probably the year charmichael got his points back for illigal fuel, that went all the way to vegas. it doesnt get any closer than this, so if reed was 30 points ahead would he all teh sudden be great for the sport? i dont get it, it reallydoesnt get better than this
April 5th, 2009 at 11:40 am
WAY TO GO BUBBA!!!!! KILLIN IT!!!!
April 5th, 2009 at 11:44 am
couldnt agree with you more
April 5th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
once again chad will not win this title bubba will
April 5th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
agreed, whoever would say such a thing hasnt put too much thought into it. hes not only acquired mainstream sponsors that will give our sport recognition, but he is the only one out there right now that has beat reed with consistency. If stewart was not racing, it would take away one of the greatest aspects of our sport; the fight for the win. You cannot take away anything from either rider since winning is when preparation and opportunity intersect
April 5th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
WOOOOO HOOOOOO Way to goooooo James Stewart!!!!!! The fastest man on the planet.
K .I.L.L.I.N. I.T.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!like Chad Reed said he always likes a good race , well Chad didnt like the (cat and mouse) give me a break Chad.
April 5th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Gotta love when the fastest rider wins. All the way James!
April 5th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Who is the best?…..the one with more speed, or the one with more consistency. Personally, I think Chad is the better rider.
Speed is good, but consistency is better.
April 5th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
best race of the year! reed is picking it up and and its gonna be a great finish to the year! reeds confidence is growing and i think he will be the champion!
April 5th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
the better rider lost the secongd week in a row
April 5th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
if chad didnt like the cat and mouse games, then he shoulda been able to pull away from it ya think? i just watched the race, and james was playing him like a quarter back with a high school cheer leader the hole time. he was slowing down, just to stay behind him.it was great then he made his move and won it easy.
April 5th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
love you Chad Reed but ( DO NOT PISS OFF ) James Stewart because when you do that James Becomes more than Thunda from down under!
April 5th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Josh Grant just called me and confirmed the broken heel. Just got off the phone with Reed, he said that he let bubbles win in an effort to boost TV ratings.
Also spoke with Lawrence, he aplogises to the fans for goobin that corner, he felt he could run with the top two if it weren’t for that mistake. Villopoto just phoned in on my satellite phone, he is appaled at the current trend to bring cat and mouse games in to the 450 class. “These tactics are childish and unessary in the premiere class. Carmichael never stooped to that level. Looks like someone is desperate.” he went on to say “these tactics are usually used by rookie 250 riders, not seasoned professionals.” were his final comments. I will keep all of you updated as more of the top pros check in.
April 5th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
AGREED!!!
April 5th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
whats up with neither of them wanting to talk about the words they exchanged.. i wonder what they were saying..
April 5th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
Damn i just watched the race and i agree with you [riding dirty]JS-7 was just riding behind Reed and you could tell he was slowing down to stay behind Reed and when he pulled the trigger he just walked away from Reed!! It was the perfect set up.I know im not the only 1 that could see what JS-7 was doing it was the perfect set up!!! Hell even RC said JS-7 was just stalking Reed.Stewart’s Corner speed and jumping skills are on some different sht’.In every shot of them in the corners Stewart looked faster and jumps,he does that so much lower then the rest of the field. It was nice to see Reed get the start he wanted now What???
April 5th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
haha sweet updates, villipotos right, somebodies desperatee. J law woulda forced made them race instead of cat and mouse I think
April 5th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Bubba took Reed back to Supercross School.. And Shut him up on NATIONAL TELEVISION.. Winners make the rules and losers live bye them!
April 5th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
they were saying….come on over to my house for dinner we tricked everyone but wait!!!! April 1st just passed and we have to do it again next race???
April 5th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Consistency lost tonight
April 5th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Of what happened during practice , Main event cat and mouse and reed jumping off the track twice in the same spot and the dirty moto secrets they both exchanged,,,,,,,,,,,WOW!!!! makes me just as curiuos too! Hey anon when you find out let me know! James was sure pissed!
April 5th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
consistency didnt lose,
consistency kept Reed in a position to win the championship.
Pressure is on stewart now to perform,
If he crashes out, it will lose him the championship
April 5th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
ohh yeah!!! 100% true man totally played around with reed!!! He finally used some strategy to win, instead of making the move early and potentionally throwing it away. He put huge amounts of pressure on reed, did you how many times reed looked back to see where he was?? and bubba used reeds own strategy by getting in his oppenents head. There’s a taste of your own medicine Reed!!!!
April 5th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
the cat and mouse games were perfect. stewart gave reed plenty of time to pull away however he is unable to match stewarts pace for 20 solid. these cat/mouse games were similar to their previous battle on 125’s at unadilla in ‘02. for those of you who haven’t seen it then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o0aHp6HezQ. very similar to today. go js7 (soon to be #1)
April 6th, 2009 at 12:03 am
Where are the Reed fans???This is getting better every wk end!
April 6th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Where are the Reed fans???Reed got his start!!!This is getting better every wk end!
April 6th, 2009 at 2:55 am
LOL!! Last time Stewart was winning all the “Stewart fans” come out of the woodwork. When Reed starts getting a larger points leed, the Stewart comments on here are scarce. lol….Just an observation. Seems like alot of people just go for who ever is fastest that week….its weak.
April 6th, 2009 at 4:51 am
I agree totally stewart is under all the pressure reed is the one with the points lead and we all no stewart is faster then reed but where does that on the edge riding get him 2nd in points i’m sure the boys at yamaha have paid him big bucks for second place u cant tell me that yamaha want him to ride on edge all the time consistency wins titles
April 6th, 2009 at 7:03 am
Just have to say, THIS was the race of the year. It was obvious that Bubba was holding back and letting Reed take the point. I was surprised that Reed FINALLY decided to battle a bit, and not let Bubba just get away. But in the end there is no question people; Bubba is the MAN!!! I just hope he can stay of the ground till the end this finish will be epic. Nice time to be a fan of the greatest sport ever!! I hope Izzi will get better soon, that is something I remember when I used to ride….WAY over the bars!!!
April 6th, 2009 at 8:14 am
bubba may be faster but chads better
best season thus far, go chad!
April 6th, 2009 at 8:17 am
who are you
April 6th, 2009 at 8:23 am
reed could go faster to but he prefurs not to break his neck. stewert has to ride over his head to win reed only crashed at A1 and thats only because him and james got hung up on eachother. you watch reeds got more.
April 6th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Can we get someone with a decent understanding of grammar to write the reports? Can we get someone who understands the difference between “past” and “passed” to write this? Can we get someone who understands that it’s “chain of events” not “change of events” or someone who simply understands the difference between plural and possessive?
April 6th, 2009 at 9:57 am
cat and mouse explained:
http://www.racerxonline.com/article/monday-conversation-ii-chad-reed-jax-sx.aspx
April 6th, 2009 at 10:03 am
bubba is just lucky he dident crash as usual….go reed!
April 6th, 2009 at 10:39 am
SOME ONE ABOVE ME SOUNDS LIKE HIS FEELINGS ARE HURT WAAAAA! WAAAAA!
April 6th, 2009 at 11:37 am
someone above me feelings are gonna be hurt when reed wins the championship so waaaaaa! to you
April 6th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
All of this is just for fun,i dont have a factory contract hell i only ride maybe twice a month.there isnt one person on here that could beat any of the 20guys that line up in a sx main event and i dont front like i know some one that knows some one that knows Reed or JS7,so come on ppl its all in fun to be a a fan of your favorite rider!Ok with that said,JS7 did put it to Reed and Reed got the start he has been talking about a Damn year and he has had a few of them! JS7 went 14-0 out doors and thats a lot tougher then sx and the he did 7 strt this yr in sx,kinda hard to think he cant pull off 4in a row!I wouldnt be suprised if every one with a yellow bike is invited over to Reed’s crib to ride his wonderful track!!How much more time is left on Mike Alessi contract???Lmaof!!!
April 6th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Izzi’s bike? Did he click 1st or have his motor lock up? That looked like a second gear jump to me..
April 6th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Im pretty sure i can beat 1 of them… in a few years you will see me up there with some of the best!
April 6th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
more like 3ed on a 250
April 6th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Reed had bad luck tonight then right, Bubba didnt crash? Awww.. Reed had a better start, had the lead, and lost it like the loser does in racing. When James passes Reed in the points in the last race, Reed will have ZERO excuses, James gives him and equal chance of winning every week, but Reed cant do Sh!t with it. At least Bubba can make his own good and bad luck, Reeds good and bad luck depends fully on James’
April 6th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
hahahaha, hey reed you got your start, what happened? hahahaha bubba flat out wrecked reed, just made him look like an idiot, stayed behind him just getting in his face, i loved every minute of it..then reed was pouting because bubba got close to him hahaha, bubba knows what he has to do now, reed should be shaking in fear because he just lost this championship! because bubba’s gonna go UNDEFEA7ED to win the championship!!
April 6th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
and RV?
April 6th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Thats a perfect 1,2,3. It’s awsome to see Windham on the podium he should be there more often.
April 6th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
why would a js7 fan make a post when someone else won that week. we speak loudly when its our turn. you are weak.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:54 am
Fact!! The pressure’s on for both riders, it ain’t over till it’s over. Consistency against speed, who will win? Looks to me that in the last race James played Chad at his own game, very smart! Like I said b4 consistency is riding in a comfort zone and good for playing it safe. But does it prepare you for going that bit extra ‘ riding on the edge’ when you need to? It’s very hard to call as either rider can lose the championship just like that. People i notice always talk about James crashing, but Chads had a few close moments trying to ride at James’s pace. Chad’s not immune from crashing just because he hasn’t yet. He could quite easy blow it too.
Come on JS7!! Remember, THE TOP SPOT IS THE ONLY SPOT!! THE JACKPOT IS THE ONLY POT!!
April 7th, 2009 at 6:46 am
i’m too uneducated to understand this comment
April 7th, 2009 at 7:19 am
YESSS! Finally Bubba has found the patience he needs to win the championship! Who cares about consistency? I want to see some speed, talent, and pizazz, and thats why Bubster is Number one whether he wins the chmpionship or not.
April 7th, 2009 at 8:20 am
what did reed and stewart say to each other after the race i wanna know sao bad
April 7th, 2009 at 8:31 am
You are right , Can’t deny the words from the G.O.A.T!
April 7th, 2009 at 8:54 am
JS7 told Reed,my bike has a carb on it and im still kickin your ass!!
April 7th, 2009 at 9:00 am
All the Reed fans see that bubba is faster and better rider so they can only tell about consistency blablabla… that`s really boring.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:47 am
we no bubba is faster but we like reed
April 7th, 2009 at 9:54 am
Reed is gonna get penalized by FIM for grabbing Bubbas neck after the race!! I hope they dont dock him points. I like dude but that was so unprofessional and immature.
April 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I would have to say that winning a couple supercross championships in the past and going 24 and 0 is pretty consistant. Would james be in second if he didn’t miss a shift at a1? I think both riders are talented to the max but feel some respect is still due to james. He has won 10 rounds thats not easy and the pressure is on reed too because he needs more speed to win this thing if bubba can do what he can he wins but reed needs a mistake he hasen’t beaten bubba with what he can do all year.
April 7th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Go Reed! Bubba negro is learning some patience. Hey may not kill him self on his bike after all.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
My gut feeling tells me that Bubba has a better chance, based on pure ability which translates into speed. But I’m going to hold my wishes for Reed, because he wants so bad and has shown us some great riding this year. Hats off to to Windham for hold off the #3 spot, all those guys behind him are screaming fast! Lets hold the racial statements to the side, this is motocross, not prison bro.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Re:Kale
I think it’s sad when people hate someone so much that they can’t appreciate their talent and have to bring colour into it. Do u think u’ll get brownie points for stating the obvious or do u want to let every1 to know that your racist? Have you got something to add on to the end of Reeds name as well?
April 7th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
wheres all the darryn durham fans, my boy from back home killin it
April 8th, 2009 at 2:38 am
Dude have you even read above your OWN post or are you blind?/stupid/ both?
April 8th, 2009 at 7:40 am
so your saying your only happy with stewart when he’s winning? a true fan would stick up for the rider no matter whats happening. your the kind of half bit fan who is happy with a winner but if james were ever to get hurt you would go out and buy reed jersey and rag on james. your a joke
April 8th, 2009 at 7:44 am
is everyone on here dumb? do any of you actually race? when your on a bike on a track you go as fast as you can for as long as you can. these guys are pros, they are trained to be the fastest riders on earth and the fastest riders on earth don’t take it easy, they go hard the whole way. your only as fast as your last race and james won the last race so he is the faster rider it’s not hard to see that.
April 8th, 2009 at 7:45 am
the better rider lost? can that even happen. james won. James stewart won the race and chad reed got second. James is better its as easy as looking and who won.
April 8th, 2009 at 7:54 am
reeds gonna win? really? because lately no matter what reed does, stewart is still putting down faster laps, still catching up to reed and blowing by him, and still winning races. so it seems to me that if james keeps doing that which should be easy as pie for him, then he’s got this. reeds good but get over it he will never be as good as stewart no matter what he does.
April 8th, 2009 at 7:58 am
haha yeah keeping dreaming. truth is your still racing the c class
April 8th, 2009 at 7:59 am
do you not understand how sx bikes are geared? that was a 2nd gear jump
April 8th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
.. I agree
April 9th, 2009 at 9:43 am
is izzi alright?
April 9th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
lmaoooooooo!!!!!!!!
April 9th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Lmaooooooooo!!! you gotta race me and anon first to evan qualify! Hey! Anonomous! did you decide which bike your gonna buy ( kawasaki) (honda)???? I’m waiting for 2010 bikes too.
April 10th, 2009 at 10:57 am
Totally, how come the network didn’t show him finish? In his own state!
April 10th, 2009 at 10:59 am
wow nothing where was Ashley?
April 11th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Stewart was slowing down but I think Reed was also, he maybe knew he wouldn’t pull away from James so he was playing it safe, 3rd place was like -10 by lap 15 or something which is a small gap comparing whit a normal race
April 13th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
At the end of the day Stewart will still be black.
April 16th, 2009 at 12:50 am
No!! At the end of the day Stewart is black.
