Race Report: Southwick MX 2012

After two weekends off following round eight in Washougal, Washington, the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championships picked back up at MX 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts, this weekend with some intense racing action in both classes.

In the 450 class, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey took another overall victory, but it wasn’t without issues, as he lost the second moto after a crash caused him to make a quick pit stop due to a fuel issue. The 250 class saw current points leader Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett extend his points lead with a commanding 3-1 performance for the overall victory.

250 Moto One:
The first race of the day saw an unexpected rider take the holeshot, as Geico Honda’s rookie Zach Bell rounded the first turn in the lead ahead Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin, Honda-mounted Shawn Rife, and Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac. On the second lap, though, Tomac had already worked his way into second and began to set his sights on Bell out front. On the sixth lap, Bell went down hard, handing the lead to Tomac and pulling out of the race. Tomac then began to quickly open up a big lead over Musquin, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Jessy Nelson. As the laps continued, Tomac’s lead continued to grow as he put in consistently fast laps. Behind him, things remained the same until the checkered flag flew. Tomac took the win followed by Musquin, Baggett, and Roczen. It’s also worth mentioning that Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia crossed the line seventh after completing the first lap in 20th.

After the first lap, though, Roczen moved into first and quickly established his control of the race. As for Nelson, he dropped back and eventually finished 11th. Up front Roczen opened up a lead over Baggett, but at the halfway mark, the Kawasaki rider managed to close the gap on Roczen, making for an intense battle during the final laps of the race. Behind them, Tomac had also caught up and attempted to make a move on Baggett for second, but clipped a tree on the inside of a tight left hand corner, causing him to go down. Tomac remounted and eventually finished third. As for Baggett, he closed on Roczen, and after swapping the lead position a couple times, he made the pass stick to ride away with the win. Behind him, Roczen took second followed by Tomac in third.
