Warm, sunny skies greeted everyone in attendance for round seven of the 2006 AMA Toyota Motocross Championships at Thunder Valley MX Park in Lakewood, Colorado. A huge crowd of over 26,000 covered the spectator areas along the hillside track located just outside of Denver. With James Stewart back in action after a nasty Saturday practice crash last week at Unadilla; and Ricky Carmichael in the midst of his farewell season, and usual domination of the Motocross class; fans were looking forward to a great day of racing as they poured into the track to watch morning practice. By the time the day was over, Ryan Villopoto would strengthen his Lites class championship points lead and RC would make another victory parade before the Colorado faithful. Here’s how it all went down…

MOTOCROSS LITES MOTO ONE

Heading into the first motos, it was Mike Alessi that had the fastest lap time in Lites practice, putting down a 2:20.845. However, after the traditional parade lap, it was Ryan Sipes aboard his RMZ-250 that grabbed the holeshot. Unfortunately for Sipes, his lead did not last very long. Ryan Villopoto quickly grabbed the lead in the first lap, and didn’t look back. Leading all 15 laps of moto one with Andrew Short, Mike Alessi and Broc Hepler battling it out behind him.

By the half way point of the moto, the top four had pulled well away from the rest of the pack, with Villopoto putting as much as 10 seconds between himself and Shorty in second. For all 15 laps, the running order of Villopoto, Short, Alessi and Hepler did not change.

Andrew McFarlane piloted his YZ250F from a ninth place start to fifth in the moto, just ahead of Star Racing/Lucas Oil/Tornado rider, Martin Davalos. Sobe/Samsung Mobile/Honda fast kid, Josh Grant never could recover from a first turn pile up and finished moto one in 19th place.

MOTOCROSS MOTO ONE

RC’s Colorado fans that were hoping for Ricky to lay another smack down on the Motocross class were not disappointed, but they had to wait a few laps…

It was Davi Millsaps who charged out of the gate for another holeshot-his third straight-and was able to hold off Kevin Windham and RC for the first four laps. In fact, thanks to a gate twitch that got Ricky hung up a little bit, he came off the blocks in an uncharacteristic sixth place. Of course, he went right to work, passing up to third place by lap two, where he found K-Dub falling behind his teammate, Millsaps. RC made the pass on Windham on lap four and then quickly shot to the front past Millsaps on the following lap. From there, it was all Carmichael as he not only led the remainder of the moto, but continued to widen the gap between himself and the rest of the field right up to the checkered flag.

James Stewart was back in action, and in moto one looked strong, despite a poor ninth-place start. James quickly picked through the field, moving from ninth to fourth by lap three. Bubba was able to get by Windham on lap eight, and would finish in second overall, ahead of Millsaps as well.

Chad Reed also put on a strong performance considering the knee injury suffered last week at Unadilla. Like Stewart d RC, Reed came off the gate unusually far behind the leaders, passing the finishing line on lap one in 11th place. Also like Stewart and RC, Reed charged through the pack up to fifth by lap eight, where he would stay until running into bike trouble on the final lap. Reed seemed to have stalled his YZ450F, but reports said that he ran out of gas.

MOTOCROSS LITES MOTO TWO

Lites moto two was full of action in the first few laps. Villopoto grabbed the holeshot and early in the first lap looked to be putting on a repeat performance from moto one. However, a little bobble by the rookie allowed Broc Hepler to slip by and take the lead for the first three laps. Coming around the finish line on lap one it was Hepler, Short and Villopoto making up the top three. The Colorado fans cheered and blew air horns for Shorty-a Colorado native-but were disappointed when his bike blew up early in lap two, possibly a casualty of the combination of high heat and altitude, which can wreack havoc on even these finely tuned machines.

Villopoto picked himself up quickly after the small bobble and caught and passed Hepler on lap four. Once in front, Ryan checked out and piloted to a 1-1 for first place overall. Hepler finished in second and Alessi completed the podium in third. Josh Grant and Andrew McFarlane rounded out the top five with fourth and fifth, respectively.

Alessi’s third place overall finish allowed Villopoto to put more space between his long time rival in the overall Lites Championship points standings. Said Alessi, “It was a consistent day, but he (Villopoto) was just faster everywhere it seemed.

MOTOCROSS MOTO TWO

Ah, to be Ricky Carmichael. It must be an incredible feeling to be able to decimate your competition moto, after moto. That is exactly what he did in moto two in Lakewood, today. Ricky came out of the gate in first place and 15 laps later, sealed the victory for his 33rd win out of the last 34 AMA Nationals.

Davi Millsaps rode a solid moto for second place, and Chad Reed came back with a vengeance from his bike troubles in moto one, grabbing third place in moto two. Fourth place was Kevin Windham, and Stewart completed the top five.

Millsaps’ 3-2 was good enough for second overall, and Stewart showed that he was making progress shaking off any effects from his Unadilla practice crash for a 2-5, third place overall. However, Bubba clearly was not riding 100% in moto two and his absence on the podium and at the post-race press conference would suggest that he continues to feel the effects from taking so many hard hits this season.

Carmichael now holds an almost overwhelming 69-point lead over Chad Reed in the Motocross Championship point standings.
