Race Report:
AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF – Unadilla Valley Sports Center, New Berlin, NY

Despite heavy rain showers that began pouring down between practice sessions on Saturday afternoon, the Unadilla circuit dried up nicely under a warm, sunny sky on Sunday to welcome an outstanding day of racing. Before the motos got underway, however, a gnarly practice crash sent none other than James “Bubba Stewart to the ground, ultimately taking him out of the day’s competition. Check back for a full report on Bubba’s crash, as well as his current state of health in Monday Kickstart. With all others locked and loaded, the gates dropped for an otherwise great day of Unadilla racing. And when all was said and done, it was once again Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto who took home the top honors.

MOTOCROSS LITES MOTO ONE

With all of the practice sessions in the books, it was Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto who sat atop the Lites class with the fastest lap time of the morning— a 2:35.83. When the gate dropped for moto one, however, it was Mike Alessi who rocketed through Unadilla’s right-hand sweeping first turn to claim the early lead, but he was followed closely by Josh Grant, Andrew McFarlane, and Andrew Short. Broc Hepler, who also showed blazing speed throughout all of the morning’s practice sessions, got buried in the pack after having to start from an outside gate. Back up front, Alessi continued to lead as Grant, Short, and Villopoto attempted to chase him down. On lap five, Short got by Grant, and behind them, Villopoto was reeling off the moto’s fastest lap times as he began creeping his way forward. The young Kawi phenom got by Shorty on lap eight, and then set his sights on the number 800. After closing the gap to within about five bike lengths on multiple occasions, Alessi never cracked as he rode a near flawless moto, and Villopoto had to settle for second, just 1.2 seconds behind. “The track’s kind of one-lined, so it made it really hard to pass, Villopoto said on the podium. “I sat back and just had to wait for some mistakes, but I didn’t get any from Mike.

Shorty piloted his factory CRF250R to a strong third place performance, and behind him came McFarlane and Brett Metcalfe in fourth and fifth, respectively. Grant had some difficulties and eventually settled back into sixth by moto’s end, and Hepler, who rounded lap one in 20 place, charged through the pack ato finished in a very impressive seventh.

MOTOCROSS MOTO ONE

With a solid Lites-class moto in the books, the gate dropped for Motocross moto one, and it was Honda’s Davi Millsaps who crossed the holeshot stripe first aboard his CRF450R. Davi was followed closely by RC, Chad Reed, Michael Byrne, and Kevin Windham as the field plowed its way through turn two. The Duke was riding extremely well and set a fast pace up front during the early going, but unfortunately for him, the pace was still no match for RC, who threw down a lap time that was a full five seconds faster on lap two. Once out front (lap two), the G.O.A.T. checked out for another leisurely Sunday stroll that ended him some 41 seconds ahead of Millsaps by the wave of the checkers. With no major shake-ups occurring up front, the real racing went down behind Millsaps, and it started when K-Dub chased down Reed early on to take over third. Reedy, who suffered a knee injury earlier in the day during the first practice seson, held on to the back of Windham for a few laps, but the #14 was just too tough as he slowly crept away. Behind them, Nick Wey, David Vuillemin, Michael Byrne, and Tim Ferry battled it out for the fifth spot, and for several laps, all four guys were so close that you could’ve throw a blanket over them. Eventually, Wey began pulling away from the group, and Ferry, who looked very strong aboard his Moto XXX Honda, worked his way into sixth. On lap 13, NYK made a mistake that allowed Ferry and Vuillemin by, dropping him to seventh at moto’s end.

MOTOCROSS LITES MOTO TWO

Josh Grant got the jump out of the gate aboard his Sobe/Samsung Mobile/Honda to kick off the second half of the day at Unadilla, with Ramsey, Boniface, McFarlane, and Villopoto close in tow. Grant continued to lead the first four and half laps of the moto, but it was a slim lead at best, as the top four were all so close at one point that they actually floated through the air simultaneously over the same jump. On lap five, some serious jockeying for the lead position went down between Grant, Ramsey, and Short, but it was Shorty on his factory Honda who eventually made a pass stick to take it over for the next five laps. A hard-charging Villopoto proved to be too tough again, however, as he slipped his way by Shorty on lap ten, never to look back. By the halfway point, things began to spread out amongst the top five, and Villopoto cruised in for the win by a comfortable margin over Short. Behind them, Ramsey held off a determined McFarlane who put in a strong ride in the fourth spot, keeping Nate Dawg honest all the way to the checkers.

Villopoto’s 2-1 performance was not only good for first overall on the day, but it also gave him the points needed to overtake Alessi in the championship points chase.

MOTOCROSS MOTO TWO

Davi Millsaps once again proved to have reflexes like a spry kitten as he snatched his second holeshot of the day ahead of Windham, RC, Antonio Balbi Jr., and Preston. Davi again rode a strong first lap as he held onto the lead, but shortly thereafter, just like in moto one, RC blazed past him on lap two only to check out for another easy win. Behind the G.O.A.T., K-Dub showed some of the speed that has eluded him throughout the first half of the series, and on lap four he got by Millsaps and rode on to a solid second place finish. Davi held on for third, despite a hard-charge out of the injured Chad Reed during the last few laps of the moto. Tim Ferry rounded out the top five.
