Motocross has always been about the people first, then the racing. Sure, the rush and excitement that racing offers attracts everyone initially, but it’s the camaraderie and the sense of community that keeps people in the sport.
It’s this sense of community that has spawned the Ride for the Cure event. Ride for the Cure is a weekend of riding, socializing, and motocross in general. But it is for a cause, other than the just the camaraderie. Ride for the Cure was established to benefit breast cancer research, specifically Michelle’s Place, a local cancer resource center.
We sat down with Cahuilla Creek MX Park owner/operator, Dan Harvell, to find out a little more about the track and its Ride for the Cure event.
How long has Cahuilla Creek MX Park been in existence?
This month (October) will be our 5 year anniversary.
For those who aren’t familiar with Cahuilla, what are your operating hours and what does this track offer?
We have open practice to the public every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9am to 3pm. This doesn’t change throughout the year, with the exception of a few races. We have a phone number you can call for an updated itinerary (951-926-4646).
Tell me about Ride for the Cure.
It takes place Saturday, October 20th and Sunday, October 21st. It is kind of like a festival. There are 2 or 3 bands playing; there is a fashion show; Kawasaki is hosting a 110cc race. It’s a fundraiser for breast cancer. We want to give back. As well, we want to showcase the growth in female riders, so there are some stunt women that will be here to perform. We have a bunch of stuff planned. We just want to entertain everyone. And there will be overnight camping.
Other than Kawasaki, who else is supporting the cause?
Well it started with Kawasaki and Fox,Thor, MSR, as well as Transworld, are supporters. Many companies donated merchandise for giveaway and silent auction. There will be pro rider jerseys, etc available for bidding. The big emphasis is just on riding; getting everyone out here to ride together and hang out.
Also, we are doing a 6 acre expansion, so we will be debuting it that weekend. It will include a new uphill/downhill section with the biggest and steepest hill we have had so far, so I am particularly excited about that.
Yeah, the new layout will remain for the rest of the year. It should be good.
How could it get any better? Who doesn’t want to spend a weekend out at the track with live music, giveaways, dealers, female stunt riders, and most importantly, riding dirt bikes? But to top it off, you would be having all of this fun for a cause. That’s what it’s all about. Be sure to logon to MOTOXFORTHECURE.COM for more information.
See you there!
