In a press conference held Saturday morning at this weekend’s National in Lakewood, Colorado, the AMA’s Steve Whitelock announced that the U.S. will field a team for the first time since 2003.
The 2005 team will consist of the current top two U.S. riders in the 250cc class, Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael and Amsoil Chaparral Honda’s Kevin Windham, as well as the current 125cc class points leader, Honda-mounted Mike Brown. Ironically, this is the same lineup that withdrew from the 2001 MXdN in Namur, Belgium, in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Team USA last won in 2000, with RC, Travis Pastrana, Ryan Hughes.
This year’s event will be held in Ernee, France on September 25th, and is expected to draw a huge crowd. Following the MXdN, the U.S. riders will have 12 days to return home and prepare for the U.S. Open in Las Vegas.
Big props to all three riders for stepping up and getting the U.S. back in the game.
