November 16, 2006 – The largest supermoto crowd in history witnessed the sport’s fastest father-son duo – Jeff and Brandon Ward – win their respective AMA national championships at Troy Lee’s “Duel At The Docks” on November 5th. Over 24,000 spectators lined the fences and explored the pits on a picture-perfect day with the historic Queen Mary gracing the background. Young Brandon won the Premier Mini class in the early afternoon, while his dad, Jeff Ward locked up his second AMA series crown after a runner-up finish in the first of two final motos later in the day.
Competitors raved about the ingenuity and quality of the Troy Lee designed track, every facet of which pleased the capacity crowd with its numerous close-up viewing locations. The action-packed weekend schedule proceeded flawlessly but for a single turn one mishap that sent a track worker to the hospital for a short stay, where he was visited by Troy Lee himself.
“All things considered, we are extremely pleased with how our event turned out,” said Bob Weber, General Manager for Troy Lee Designs who oversaw every aspect of the “Duel At The Docks”.
“This race was a perfect example of how supermoto racing can take place almost anywhere there’s a decent stretch of asphalt and a creative promotions team to put it all together,” continued Weber. “That’s why we’re so bullish about the future of the sport. For spectators, there’s something for everyone, and the racers really embrace the ‘anyone-can-win’ aspect of supermoto racing, as evidenced by having guys on the grid from so many different disciplines. You wouldn’t expect to see such a unique mix of awesome talent in any other form of motorcycle racing. But they’re here for supermoto.”
That diversity was evidenced by entries like freestyle motocross luminaries Mike Metzger and Carey Hart, champion roadracers Danny Eslick and Josh Hayes, and dirt track national champion Joe Kopp. The event also attracted healthy sponsorship support from Mattel’s Hot Wheels, Oakley, Weekend Warrior Trailers, and the beer category’s newest player: MotoBrew. The Las Vegas-based brand chose the sun-drenched event to launch “MotoBrew Light” their newest line extension, and based on rigorous sampling by a spirited crowd, another new winner may have emerged.
