KETCHUM, Idaho, February 19, 2004 — Smith Optics is pleased to announce that Travis Pastrana has joined its roster of top motocross athletes. MX’s rising star signed a two-year deal to represent Smith.
Pastrana is considered an icon in the world of motocross and has received more accolades in just 20 years than most racers have in their entire lives. He has made a name for himself in the sport, winning numerous contests including taking the Gold medal in freestyle MX three years in a row at X Games, most recently at 2003’s competition. This year, Travis is staying busy competing in select AMA Supercross events and will ride in this Summer’s X Games, Gravity Games and the Van’s Triple Crown. Recently, Pastrana changed gears and equipment for his debut in the 2004 SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Sno*Drift Pro Rally during the last weekend in January in Atlanta, Michigan. Pastrana did exceptionally well driving his 2002 Subaru WRX rally car through the icy conditions and during the 2nd day of racing he finished 7 of the 12 stages within the top 10 stage times.
“We are really excited to welcome Travis to the moto team. This is definitely one of the biggest things that’s happened to the MX division at Smith, which boasts an already winning line-up including Sebastien Tortelli, Mike Brown, the Alessi brothers and Kenny Bartram, said Mark Phares, Smith Optics’ GM of Motorsports. “We see Travis as one of the preeminent athletes in the sport and are looking forward to supporting him in his future endeavors.
Pastrana’s MX career started out at age four when he began riding a one-speed Honda Z-50 in his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland. He won a string of National Amateur Motocross titles before he had his license and became the World Freestyle Champion at age 14. Travis is constantly raising the bar and taking motocross to new levels with his innovative style. He is even credited with inventing many of the sport’s tricks. Pastrana hates to lose and has managed to avoid career upsets by winning every freestyle competition he has entered.
An over-achiever in every sense, Pastrana graduated from high school three years early and is currently studying communications at the University of Maryland. The rising motocross star also writes his own column in Racer X and recently completed his own video. When he’s not competing, signing autographs or appearing on the pages of GQ Magazine, MX’s “nice guy can be found working on his 20-acre backyard track in Annapolis. Pastrana’s other sponsors include Suzuki, Puma, Thor, Kicker, Parts Unlimited, MasterCraft and OGIO Bags.
