Jumps come in all different shapes and sizes—big, small, far, short, fast, and slow—and depending on the type of jump, more lift might be needed to get up and over the kicker safely. If the jump is immediately out of a turn, seat bouncing to get more lift off the face is usually a viable yet advanced option for clearing the gap effortlessly. While out preparing for the Supercross season, Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps continuously seat bounced this particular triple jump leading into a rhythm section at the Honda SX track in Corona, California. To get the lowdown on how to fly higher and further in a shorter amount of distance, we cornered him between motos to pick his brain about the technique of seat bouncing.
(1) SIT BACK: In this picture, the face of the jump is really steep coming right out of a corner, so the further back you sit, it’s going to be easier to get over the jump. If you sit more toward the middle and try to seat bounce, the back end is just going to kick you and you’re going to go over the bars.
(2) PULL BACK: At the same time you sit back on the seat, you should also pull back on the bars to keep the front end from going down and the back end from kicking you. If you do these two things at the same time, the bike should fly straight.

(3) COMPRESS THE SUSPENSION: Compressing the suspension by sitting down helps you to go further and higher off the jump. It gives you the lift that you need when compared to standing up and hitting the same jump. For some reason, sitting down gives you that little extra oomph.
(4) HIT THE THROTTLE SMOOTHLY: You want to make sure you have the gas on all the way off the face of the jump. If you don’t do this, the bike might kick you over the bars since the front wheel will likely drop when you leave the face of the jump.
(5) START OFF SMALL: If you’re going to try this for the first time, do it over a small jump and see how it is. There are definitely better jumps to do this off of than others, and if it’s right out of a corner, that is the best situation. If it’s a smaller jump, it just makes it a little sketchy, because the back end compresses quicker and has more of a chance of kicking you over the bars. At high speed, I wouldn’t recommend seat bouncing. In a big rhythm section, though, you can pretty much seat bounce anywhere and be fine.

First! Look at his rear tire and how it is so compressed!!! I’m surprised that thing didn’t get a pinch flat before the pic was shot!
April 14th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
your not wrong mate, Iwould like to know what psi he is running in that tire,
April 14th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
once in the air, the seat should kick u to where ur in the normal standing position (in the air) right? and then should the bike straighten itself (from front end high) out by itself or do i have to press the clutch and front brake to straighten it out?
April 14th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Been a hot minute since they had tips and how toos
April 14th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Totally. Tryin’ to turn that around. my fault for not gettin’ more tips and tricks on here.
April 14th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

April 14th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
First time i tryed this i wreck myself
April 14th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

April 14th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

April 14th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
THis is a repeat as well.
April 14th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
yeah that is crazy if never seen a tier flatten out like that
April 14th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
nice to see a tuesday tip/how to again
April 14th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
No FRONT brake in the air…. Dangerous
April 14th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
HIS REAR END IS SO COMPRESSED ITS ANNOYING ME!
April 14th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
i’ve heard they run tubliss tires like the nu-tech system. Not too sure though. I saw this pic in a mag and i couldn’t stop staring haha
April 14th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
thats stupid..
April 14th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
you all may be surprised at how common the tire compressing like this actually is. expecially on landings. it just requires the picture to be taken at the right time. makes someone respect wheels a lot more..
April 14th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
maybe its cuz you beaches kept complaining about the music instead of just enjoying them
April 15th, 2009 at 2:15 am
front break in the air is like tying a 100pound rock to your front wheel. your nose will drop real hard. much harder than rear brake
April 15th, 2009 at 3:15 am
No way. You think thattire is compressed, check out pics of Bubba at AI. I thought he was on flat but really thats how the tire gets.
April 15th, 2009 at 4:00 am
Yea i saw that, pretty crazy!!!
April 15th, 2009 at 6:37 am
Hahah Just try it!
Grabb some Front Break over a small table!
April 15th, 2009 at 7:29 am
so many spodes going out and trying this today and getting tossed over the bars….make sure you have a camera handy kids
April 15th, 2009 at 8:37 am
when i goon ride sometimes i grab both the font and rear break in break in the air at the same time and nothing bad ever came out of it.the
front end just drops alittle more than normal.
April 15th, 2009 at 8:58 am
that pis is SO rad. seriously
April 15th, 2009 at 8:59 am
PICTURE
April 15th, 2009 at 9:23 am
YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF SPOOLS!
April 15th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Never grab the front brake over a big jump! You will lose the gyro effect that helps keep your bike straight up and down.
April 15th, 2009 at 10:31 am
I’ve tried this and ya something goes off a bit, my bike just lost a lot of stability to fly straight.
April 15th, 2009 at 10:40 am
I love all music! And i don’t complain. I’m haPpY!
April 15th, 2009 at 10:41 am
I love spool!
April 15th, 2009 at 11:20 am
About 12 - 14 psi, you want the tire to have some air but not too muhc so it grabs better
April 15th, 2009 at 11:52 am
G-snatch… moron
Francis… nice exageration front doesnt drop that dramatically it only tweaks the bike
April 15th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Many many spools! Im suprised that some of these comments came from actual Riders “cough, cough” using the front brake in the air hahahah n all these “omg that tires compressed!” im suprised that rubber can compress?! is that possible wow thats so gnarly
April 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
IF YOU DONT WHAT A SPOOL IS YOU ARE ONE !
April 15th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Front break in air=bad crashes. At least that’s what i’ve experienced.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
you gotta use the whole travel of your suspension and even wheels these factory teams test everything thousands of times
April 15th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
I HAVE A NICE SWIMMING SPOOL DOES THAT COUNT?
April 15th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
i sometimes feather the front brake and tap the back just before landing on the down side of a step up or something like that. I’ve never had any problems and it feels brilliant and smooth to do. i don’t think the front wheel actually stops and I’m literally touching the front lever.
April 15th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
ya beause you are a squid and tool !
April 15th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
the way they get the tires to compress that far is they run 7-10 psi. factroy sercet!
April 15th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
because you are a spool!
April 15th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
yeah. sorry, i meant back break. so it is used.. thanks guys.
(exept dallaswang)
April 16th, 2009 at 8:00 am
hes in a freakin rut, yall are retarted
April 16th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Whoever calls someone a spool is retarded. Quit trying to make up insult words to make yourself feel better about being an idiot. Who gives a shit if people are excited about a tire compressing, mind your own damn business.
April 16th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Sorry sir, you are the retard. look at how the knobbles are folded back onto the rim. Look at how theres clean rubber all the way round the tire expect where its compressed. Theres a little rut leading up to where he is, but hes not in a rut anymore. His tire is squashed flat.
April 16th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
amen
April 16th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Eaiser said than done I guess… Here goes nothing.
April 17th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Am I just the only one who thinks a proper seat bounce is, compressing the suspension at the beginning of the jump and decompressing by making a quick transition to standing up at the lip of the jump? That way you’ll jump a lot further imho
Cheers!
April 17th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
You guys are the biggest bunch of spode, goon, wannabe, couch bouncin, potatoe chip eatin, morons!
April 18th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
i agree with u
April 20th, 2009 at 8:22 am
poop?
April 26th, 2009 at 2:25 am
the first timei tried this i over shot and landed on some little kid on a 50. He was ok though. I was riding a kx65 at the time, you know first race bike. But all inall seat bouncing does the trick. Its like skateboarding you have to pop to get some where. oh and you’re all a bunch of down syndrome child molesters, just kidding but hows that for an made up insult.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:51 am
Every time i look at this picture i get an uncontrollable urge to rip a baby from its mothers arms and shake it wildly.
April 26th, 2009 at 3:09 am
the music is lame they should have played post mortal ejaculation by CANNIBAL CORPSE!!!!!!
April 26th, 2009 at 3:29 am
i’m sorry when i was born the doctor dryed me off in the microwave. by docter I mean step father. I was sent to a foster home where I beaten daily and told that i was a mistake and that i should be punnished for it.At the age of six i decided to run away. One night I climbed out of a window made it two blocks away before this wonderfull family picked me up and decied to raise me as there own. Every time something reminds me of my past I tell my self it never happened but in reality the scars will never leave. But when I’m riding I’m happy and everything goes away.
April 26th, 2009 at 10:05 am

June 17th, 2009 at 3:32 am
absolutly nothing good. Railer said it.
June 17th, 2009 at 3:35 am
Haha right on
June 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
The seat bounce is the shiz. The tubliss stuff from nuetech is also taking off you can never get an order in before they are out of stock again. Thanks for posting the tip!
June 30th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
How do you modifiy the seat bounce on a supermoto? should you be more in the center since you need all the traciton you can get in the corner that might be coming up??
July 6th, 2009 at 7:57 am
wonder what he had the tire pressure at
July 6th, 2009 at 8:04 am
don't grab the front brake while in the air unless you need to because when riding in loose sand conditions it is not good to have a stopped wheel going into the landing(incase of digging in and further squirreling out). Use the back brake while holding in the clutch(because you can rev to spin the tire back to the original spin).
July 13th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
spam
July 13th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
yea it should move you closer to the neutral position, but if you are front end high, and leaning forward won't bring it down at all, then you pull in the clutch and tap the BACK brake. the front brake won't really do anything to bring your front tire down. give it a shot killer, this should help ya
August 19th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
we need more how-tos please
August 31st, 2009 at 8:24 pm
The last time I pulled back while going over a jump I looped out completely!
September 5th, 2009 at 5:10 am
I don't appreciate all the name calling from a bunch of no brain loosers that cant ride like pros..
September 7th, 2009 at 3:21 am
hah yeah
September 7th, 2009 at 3:24 am
yeah, me too
September 15th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
WELL DAVI HERE ISNT USING JUST REGULAR TUBES LIKE YOU AND I. HE USES A NEW TUBELESS PRODUCT WHICH ALLOWS HIM TO USE AS LOW AS 7 PSI WITHOUT THE WORRY OF BEAD BREAKAGE. CHECK IT OUT, AROUND $120 OR SO.
October 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
neverrrr hit the front brake in the air that just screams bad idea, it makes turning the bars almost impossible. hit the rear brake to get the front end down Ral820
October 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
im not sure, but i think the joe gibbs team does. they just now have tubless rims for sale as of a few months ago, i heard some even use nitrogen or somthing like they do in nascar so they dont lose any air when it heats up or cools down.
