TWMX 2004 Holiday Gift Guide

By Intern Lisa
Photos by Donn Maeda

Being the Editorial Intern here at TransWorld Motocross Magazine is a lot of fun; I’ve gotten to meet a lot of great people and have traveled to some exotic places like Glen Helen Raceway and Cahuilla Creek MX Park. Well, at least the guys tell me those places are exotic…

During the past eight months, I’ve actually learned quite a bit about motocross. The guys say I am the best at washing bikes and cleaning air filters, but after I pinched three tubes in a row they have banned me from tire changing. That’s a good thing, though, because doing that busted up my nails! In addition to learning about the sport and the bikes, I’ve also learned a lot about the riders themselves. It takes a different type of person to ride motocross, that’s for sure!

That being said, the editors asked me to compose this year’s Holiday Gift Guide. I’ve assembled things that I think would be great gift ideas for both the men and women on your list, and I’ve also tried to keep the prices all under $200. After all, as an unpaid intern, I am on a serious budget! – Lisa

Bell Moto 7 Kid’s MC Replica

Price: $109.95

One of my favorite things about going to the track is watching the little kids ride. Donn has hit his head lots of times, so he’s always stressing the importance of a good, high-quality helmet. In fact, he cringes when he sees kids on the peewee track wearing cheap knock-off helmets. This particular helmet is a Bell, so you know it’s good, and it is also a Jeremy McGrath replica, so you know your kids will love it!

Shift Rumble Leather Jacket

Price: $199.95

Okay, now listen up boys: if you want to get your girl something motocross related for the holidays, please resist the urge to buy her a pitboard so she can signal you while you race. Equally bad choices are an umbrella to hold over your head while you are on the line, or a bottle of Windex to clean your goggles with. Treat her to something nice, for a change, like this sweet Rumble leather jacket from Shift. It comes in black, white, plum, and blue. All are equally cool.

ARC Folding Levers

Price: $69.95 each

I got tired of replacing the bent-up levers on Cooley’s test bikes, so I finally ordered up a set of these folding levers from ARC. If you’ve got a rider on your list who has a tendency to fly off his bike unexpectedly like Cooley does, these are a great gift idea! At seventy bucks each they might seem expensive, but trust me: they are worth their weight in gold!

Smooth Industries Metzger/Windham Two—Piece Pajamas

Price: $34.95

These two little guys belong to senior test rider Rich Taylor. Richard and Zachary may have a dad who has accomplished plenty as a racer himself, but there’s no wishing for pajamas that look like daddy’s come bedtime in the Taylor household. Rich is a pretty good sport about the kids wanting to look like K-Dub and Metz, but he’s hoping that Zachary doesn’t get too used to those tattoo sleeves.

Thor Speed Racer Long Sleeve and Seeing Stars Beanie

Price: $29.95 (Speed Racer), $16.95 (Beanie)

The fellas at Thor have a whole new line of girls’ casuals for 2005, and plenty of the items are very, very cute. Take this Speed Racer long sleeve, for instance. It still looks ke a motocross shirt, thanks to the subtle Thor logo, but it isn’t over the top. Girls like subtlety, guys. Remember that! The Seeing Stars Beanie is going to be perfect for spectating at those winter Supercrosses.

Ride Engineering Remote Compression Adjusters

Price: $89.98 (Showa) $94.95 (KYB)

Ever since Ride Engineering invented these little compression adjuster things, the editors have been all bitter! Why? Because now when they are testing suspension, they can’t make me stand on the side of the track in a bikini top, holding a screwdriver in case they need to change their fork settings. According to Donn, these things are really cool for riders who are picky about their suspension setup.

Maxima SC-1

Price: $5.98 per can

Whenever I wash the test bikes, I always finish off the job by spraying Maxima SC-1 all over them. It makes the bikes look great and it also helps keep mud from sticking. Keep it away from your seat covers, though. The last time I shined the CRF450R seat cover up, Garth went sliding off the back. Man, was he upset! Big Girth told me that SC-1 has silicone in it, so I tried spraying it on my chest. Strangely enough, it didn’t work! This stuff will still make an awesome stocking stuffer, though!

One Industries ’05 Graphics

Price: $59.95

The guys at One Industries just sent a bunch of their 2005 graphic kits to our offices, and we think that they have outdone themselves. All of the new stuff looks great, and speaking from experience, it all installs and fits perfectly, too! If the rider on your list has clapped-out stock graphics, breathe a breath of life into his ride with a set of these babies!

Shift Leather Bustier and Lovely Rita Jeans

Price: $79.95 (Bustier), $56.95 (Jeans)

Over the past few months I have figured out that the average motocross guy has a dirty mind. That said; I know you guys will love this leather bustier from Shift! Whether or not you can get your girl to wear it out with you is another thing, but I can say from personal experience that this thing makes you feel great. Pair it with Lovely Rita jeans, and you will be set for a hot night on the town!

Etnies Lo Cut 3

Price: $60.95

Etnies may not be a motocross company, but you can’t live your whole life in motocross boots. The Lo Cut 3 is the most comfortable skate shoe I have ever worn, plus they don’t have that big fat tongue that most skate shoes have. They have sizes for men and women, so they will make a great gift for anyone on your list. Most importantly, though, Chad Reed and Grant Langston wear Etnies Lo Cut 3s! So hot!

Fox Racing RC Kids Two—Piece Pajamas

Price: $34.95

There’s nothing cuter than a little boy in motocross pajamas, and our little buddy Kade here is counting the days until he can get a bike and be just like his favorite rider Ricky Carmichael. Made to look exactly like the gear RC wears, your little one can dream of bustin’ berms and doing doubles while sleeping in a set of these pajamas from Fox.

Spy Maverick Backpack

Price: $89.95

If you have a student on your list, the Spy Maverick backpack is an awesome choice! I use one to lug all of my heavy books around campus, even though there are usually several guys willing to carry them for me. The Maverick has plenty of pockets for all your stuff, and the straps and back panel are nice and comfy thanks to their great padding.

Dragon Goggles

Price: $30.00-$42.00

Ever since he got that Bruce Lee DVD collection for his birthday, Donn has been wearing nothing but Dragon goggles. He tried to make some of those nunchacku things out of some wood curtain rods, but all he ended up with was a few stitches in his forehead. Cooley, meanwhile, favors Dragon goggles because they fit great and absorb sweat like no other. Personally, I think the Dragon logo is cute!

Troy Lee Designs Stopwatch

Price: $45

Fiore the ad guy is always asking me to time him at the track so he can properly gauge how much time he has to make up on Donn, Garth, and Cooley, so I got ahold of this super cool stopwatch from Troy Lee Designs. With plenty of lap-taking functions, it will make a great present for any serious racer on your list. As far as using it to take Fiore’s lap times, though, I’ve found a sundial more appropriate for that!

Did you know that av dark-colored plastic jug like this one from VP can help your gas maintain its octane rating longer? (See, I did learn something in college after all!)
