Injuries suck—plain and simple. When a rider hits the dirt, a season can go up in smoke in the blink of an eye. Goals are discarded, dreams are dismissed, and foundations that were built on hard work and determination are left to crumble and turn to dust. But with a rider sidelined, doors often open for those waiting for an opportunity, and when Chad Reed decided he could no longer continue his season despite his valiant effort to fight through the pain, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s 250 West Coast rider Dean Wilson was presented with a chance to go race in the premier class. Wilson will line up on Reed’s Kawasaki KX450F at round nine of Monster Energy Supercross in Indianapolis, Indiana, this weekend, in what will be his 450 SX debut. We spotted Deano at Pala Raceway on Friday, and although it was only his third day on the bike, he was looking quite comfortable as Lars Lindstrom and the Discount Tire/TwoTwo Motorsports team helped him get acclimated to the new ride.

Are you pumped to be back on a 450?

Yeah, it’s good. I mean, I was quite happy on my 250, but Chad’s 450 is feeling really awesome so far. I’m enjoying it.

How did Chad come to you with the idea of racing his bike?

He approached me pretty much while he was on his way to the hospital in Dallas, after he tried doing practice and it didn’t work out. He asked me if I’d like to race his bike, and I just told him I’d love to. I had to go through some sponsors first and stuff like that, but Mitch [Payton] was cool with it, and Reid Nordin at Kawasaki was cool with it. It all happened on Tuesday and this is my third day on my bike.

Was the bike set up for your liking the way Chad had it?

Chad had the bike set up really good. I just had to change some things for my own personal settings, but other than that it’s pretty good and I’m comfy on it.

What are you expectations when you line up in the 450 class at Indy?

I really don’t know. I’m just going to try to get a good start and do my best for 20 laps—wherever it takes me, it takes me. I have no expectations really. I just want to see where I end up.

You’re working with a new group of guys over at Discount Tire/TwoTwo Motorsports. How has it been so far?

It’s really good. Everyone has been awesome, and I’m really enjoying it. My mechanic Ollie [Stone] has been able to help out, too. It’s a good experience for me.

What’s the plan as far as how many rounds you’ll race on the bike?

We don’t know yet. Two for sure, most likely three, but I don’t know.
