CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 29, 2007) — Unbound Energy Drink’s Chad Reed (San Manuel/Yamaha) rallied back from a spectacular mid-race crash to preserve a podium finish this past weekend at San Francisco’s SBC Park, Round Four of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
Reed, who remains solidly in 2nd place overall in the championship points chase behind James Stewart (97-82), got things going quickly in the main when he pulled the $1,500 Progressive Direct Holeshot and led the race early. By lap four Stewart would catch Reed, then the two would battle for the lead — hopefully foreshadowing what a healthy Reed will be able to do versus the series points leader as the season progresses.
“It’s a long championship season and I have a great team, said Reed. “I’m was pumped to go out there and get another holeshot, give it my all, throw it away and still end up on the box.
Reed made the main by virtue of a 2nd place finish in the first heat race — a race he also pulled the holeshot in. He also went off the track in his heat race, but was able to regain his composure and still finish 2nd behind Stewart.
“Chad’s stepping it up, said Stewart, when asked about Reed’s improving speed since his shoulder injury.
Leading the main event and all-time motocross wins leader Ricky Carmichael, Reed would throw it away off the face of a step up jump, ‘rodeo’ing’ his bike into another section of the track and handing the lead over to Carmichael, then 2nd to Stewart.
“I can’t believe I threw it down like that, said Reed. “I just wanted to run with these guys and week by week we’re getting better.
Also representing Unbound Energy Drink on the San Manuel/Yamaha team at San Francisco was Nathan Ramsey. Ramsey had an excellent heat race, making the podium in 3rd behind former supercross champ Carmichael and SX Lites champ Ivan Tedesco. But tough luck would strike Ramsey early in the main event when he went down in a sea of bikes at the start and was forced to race back all the way from last place — which he did with a vengeance, salvaging a hard-fought 13th overall.
On the season Ramsey is in 14th place overall, just 12 points out of the top ten.
Unbound Energy Drink-backed Reed and Ramsey return to action this weekend (Feb. 3rd) for the final installment of the Anaheim Stadium trilogy, Round Five of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
