CARLSBAD, Calif., (March 5, 2007) —Things were looking good at St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome this past Saturday night for Unbound Energy Drink’s Chad Reed (San Manuel/Yamaha). The former champion pulled the $1,500 Progressive Direct holeshot and took the lead into the initial stages of the race.
But a few turns into the contest, points leader James Stewart appeared to get by Reed on the high side of a turn, and when Reed slashed in low on his line the two collided — sending the series points leaders to the stadium floor.
“I’m out here to race and I’m not going to be pushed around like I have been, said Reed on the podium afterwards. “We came together and both went down. I didn’t want that to happen, but hey, it’s racing.
Fortunately Reed was able to get his bike back up and running fairly quickly after the wreck and set out after some of the planet’s top young supercross talent that had gotten past him when he went down. One by one his challengers would fall, including former Lites champions Davi Milsaps (’06) and Unbound Energy-backed teammate Nathan Ramsey (’99).
“I did my best but Ricky (Carmichael) was gone, said Reed of the eventual winner.
In the end Reed would settle for 3rd overall, keeping the points chase with Stewart tight.
Reed’s San Manuel/Yamaha teammate, Ramsey, pulled off his best finish of the year with a 5th overall in the premier AMA Supercross class at St. Louis. Ramsey got to the main with a solid 4th place finish in his heat race. In the main he got a good start and was in podium contention after the Reed/Stewart crash and only yielded four spots to the world’s top supercross racers in Carmichael, Reed, Stewart and Kevin Windham.
Next up for Unbound Energy’s Reed and Ramsey is Round Ten of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, March 9th.
