Vegas Showdown: Quotes and Points for Carmichael and Reed

Listed below are the quotes from the post-race press conference with Chad Reed and Ricky Carmichael. Heading into Las Vegas, if Reed wins, Carmichael needs to finish fifth or better to get the championship. If Reed wins and Carmichael gets sixth, they are tied in points, but Reed would win the championship based on most season wins.

Reed has six AMA wins to Carmichael¿s seven.

If Reed took second and Carmichael a ninth, they would be tied in points, firsts and seconds. Then third place would determine the winner.  What’s ironic is that both riders have one third place on the season going into Las Vegas.

Carmichael:

“We came together and I fell.  I am not going to dwell on it but I definitely won¿t forget it.  I am in a tough position.  There are things that I think about, and things that I have to protect.  Chad is going to do that and hope for something on my side to go wrong.  He is not just going to come in there and pass me fair and square and blow me away.  He is going to have to come in there and take me out and hopefully I fall down and smash my pipe or something so I can’t finish.

“The thing was he (Ferry) kind of let Chad by there, when he looked back and saw me I saw he was going to try and cut in front of me.  Luckily I got in front of him.  Then I was about to make a move on Chad at the time, and then I looked over to my left and I saw Timmy do a double and just grab a handful.  He was going for me in the turn, no matter what he says, I just find it funny how he is here this weekend.  They have to make something happen, any way you look at it.  We would do the same thing if we had to.  As far as that goes there is a lot of jealousy and bitterness with Timmy.  He has had a hard time with my success.  He was always better than me as an amateur and older, then I came up and started doing really well. Ever since then things have changed since I have been winning.  All that stuff adds up.  You won’t see me next week going in and deliberately trying to take someone out and knock them in the cheap seats.   There is a time and place for that but it’s definitely not this weekend.

“Tonight my starts were terrible.  I was sideways.  I ran into Chad.  I am just out there trying to stay out of trouble.  I don’t want to settle for second and I won’t.  I also need to be smart and safe.

“Something has to happen.  If he takes me out that’s one good thing for him.”

Reed:

“Tonight was somewhat interesting.  It started in practice yesterday.  The guys at Yamaha really worked hard on my bike.  It was my first time riding at Salt Lake.  Everyone told me how slow the bikes were here.  I really didn’t think they would be that slow.  They did some hard work and we had the best bike out there.  My starts were definitely down this weekend.  I came together with Ricky on the start.  From there it was trying to get to the front as fast as possible and win the race.

“I think everyone is just blowing this out of proportion. It’s the heat of the moment.  Ricky seems a little pissed right now.  That’s his deal.  Everyone seems to be thinking Timmy is out here to help me.  The real truth is my relationship with Timmy right now isn’t that great either.  Whatever he and Ricky have going on is up to them.  I did my job tonight.  I won the race and once I got out front I put some times together and I feel I was the fastest guy out there.

“Timmy is in a difficult situation.  He got sick.  His contract is up.  We will work things out.  The nationals are coming up.  I will go back and ride on his track in Florida and works things out as professionals.

“It seemed like all three of us went together on the triple.  I was off to the right and out of the way.  The next thing I see is a red bike go flying across and then a blue bike flying through the air.  I looked around and Reddog (Ferry) was on the ground.  Basically it messed Ricky up and I and a good run on him down the whoops.  I put it in there.  I made an aggressive pass and he went down.”
