Ten of the best freestyle motocross riders in the world converged in Ireland this weekend for the Red Bull X-Fighters contest, where, for the first time in history, the event is being held on the grounds of the historic Slane Castle.
Not only is the setting as unique as it is beautiful, but the course itself is a big change versus past X-Fighters venues. Traditionally held in bullrings with just one landing in the center, the Slane course broke the mold; 10 ramps, two dirt hits, and even a quarter pipe make up the gigantic battlefield. And speaking of the quarter pipe, the new obstacle already claimed its first victim during practice today: Australian Robbie Maddison went down hard off of it and broke his lower leg. Maddo will undergo surgery to repair the break Saturday; we will keep you posted on his condition.
TWMX was on-hand today for the practice session, and although the Red Bull staff was pretty strict about not letting us take any photos, we managed to sneak in a few shots before the security guards made us put our lenses away… Come back tomorrow for a full report on what went down at the first-ever X-Fighters Ireland, and for more photos of the event.
