CARLSBAD, Calif., (Feb. 19, 2007) — Monster Energy-backed Jason Lawrence (Yamaha of Troy) put his YZ250F on the podium for the 5th time in seven rounds of Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series Western Lites racing, again ahead of the factory Yamaha and KTM racers.
Half of the closest 1-2 rivalry going in the sport now, Lawrence was quick to give props to fellow Monster Energy-backed racer Ryan Villopoto on his clinching of the overall Western Lites title.
“Congrats to him (Villopoto) on the championship, said Lawrence from the podium.
Lawrence made the main event with a uncharacteristic podium finish in his heat race (3rd). Up to this point Lawrence had given hints of his speed in practice, but rode just enough to make the main in many of the heat races. In fact, Lawrence was blazing in his heat race, clocking the fastest Lites lap of the night with a 51.038. Now really fired up to race in front of his adopted hometown fans (Carlsbad, Calif.), Lawrence finished 3rd in his heat and looked to have won the holeshot in the main, only to get closed out by a charging Monster Energy-backed Chris Gosselaar at the wire.
“I thought I had the holeshot, but came out in 3rd which was good, said Lawrence. “Then Ryan (Villopoto) closed up on me and we came together on the next corner and he blew out a few of my spokes. I was cool to see him come back like that after last weekend. Note: Lawrence nearly put Villpoto on the ground with an aggressive — but legal — pass at Houston the previous weekend.
So with 2nd place in the Western Lites wrapped up and two full months before the final race resumes in Seattle (April 28th), Lawrence will look to focus on his training and bike set up for the Outdoor Nationals.
“I start outdoor testing on Monday, he said. “Then I’m heading to Georgia to stay with Nico Izzi and his dad to test for outdoors some more.
Next up for Lawrence is the April 28th running of the Seattle Supercross, Round Eight of the AMA Supercross Lites class championship of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
