With the outdoor season now underway, it’s a regular sight to catch top pros training and keeping their skills sharp at the local Southern California tracks. Today, we happened to be out at Pala Raceway while Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen and Mysplash/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham and Cooper Webb were getting some track time in before heading out for round two of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championships in Lakewood, Colorado, this coming weekend. We closed the 2013 Muscle Milk TWMX Race Series SoCal Spring Cup with a full weekend at Competitive Edge in Hesperia, California. The two-day race was the perfect way to end another successful championship, and to celebrate, we gave away a Yamaha generator, EZ-Up, and PW50.

Our guilty pleasure is the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series. The short-course truck series that sprawls across the Southwest has some of the most talented off-road racing drivers in the world competing for championships, with two of those being Jeremy McGrath and Brian Deegan. The motocross stars are talented behind the wheel of the 800 horsepowers trucks, thanks mostly to the carryover of their motocross skills. Anytime a LOORRS race hits SoCal, we make sure to get a hold of our contacts at Lucas Oil for a few passes. Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park has one of the best racing circuits in the series, as the track is built into the ground and has a stadium feel to it, which made last weekend’s racing even better.

Michael Rodriguez has been a regular in the Spring Cup Series and came out to the two final rounds of the series to claim more championship points in the Intermediate class. Racing both the 250 and 450 classes through the series, Rodriguez has had very consistent results with his 450 placing a few notches higher than the 250 class. We stopped to talk to Rodriguez in-between his multiple motos during the day to learn more about the rider of the #403 bike.

What got you started riding motorcycles?

My dad, we rode ATVs, and since then I’ve just been riding. I was 10 when I started.

Was got you interested in it, was it your father?

It kind of just happened from seeing supercross and motocross on TV.

What got you to switch from ATVs to motorcycles?

We just saw that motorcycles were cheaper and it looked like more fun.

What is it about racing that drives you to keep coming back?

It is about all I’ve known. I just like the competition and competitiveness.

How long have you been riding the Intermediate class?

I’ve been riding in the Intermediate class since ’09.

In the years you’ve been racing, what is your biggest accomplishment?

That’s hard to say. Mostly just trying my hardest.

How has this series been for you?

Pretty good on and off, but I had some bad luck. Perris went ok, Glen Helen was ok, but some bad luck and crashes here and there. But overall it was ok.

What else do you like about the Muscle Milk TWMX Series?

This series is great, I really like the 2 classes for $45 and everything runs smooth and on time.

How often do you get to ride to keep race ready?

I ride about 3 days a week.

What other things do you do for training?

I ride a stationary bike and running.

What other activities do you have besides motocross?

That’s pretty much it, just moto.

Monster Energy MX Nationals Round 3 – Port Elizabeth

The third round of the Full Throttle Monster Energy South African National Motocross Championships took place at the Sandy Rover Motocross track in Port Elizabeth this past weekend and all riders came down with something to prove. On Saturday when the riders arrived it was obvious to see the wet track was going to prove challenging and it showed in the practice heats.

Daryl Fitzgerald, who was a big hopeful at the Rover MX track, unfortunately crashed out in the practice rounds and broke his collar bone. We hope the recovery goes well.

Monster Energy`s Richie van der Westerhuizen has been on top form all season and he carried that form through, getting top qualifying times.

Throughout the day the weather improved and so did Richie, taking top spot in the first MX1 and MX2 heats on his Monster Energy Full throttle Yamaha 250 F and 450 F respectively.

The Sunday was going to be a big one for the riders who pulled through to ROVER MX. The weather was unbelievable and the track was rutted like no other, but that didn`t stop the MX1 and MX2 classes from tearing away at it from the start line. The crowds came out in full force to get behind their local favorites and cheered all day, giving the riders a massive morale boost. There was pure carnage going down with everyone putting there bodies on the line and trying to keep up with the fast man up front. A seemingly impossible task as he easily dominated the sandy track the whole weekend, pulling enormous gaps and proving why he is still the top rider in South Africa.

The Hangtown MX Classic Starts off the National Motocross Season

The first round of the 2013 Lucas Oil National Motocross series kicked off last weekend in Sunny California at famed Hangtown raceway. SCOTT athletes showed up eager for a fresh start and a chance to prove themselves outside the confines of a stadium.

SCOTT goggle athlete Blake Baggett came out swinging at Hangtown with an uncharacteristic holeshot in moto 1. Still recovering from a wrist injury sustained at the opening round of Supercross, Baggett rode smart and consistent to finish 3rd in moto 1. In the second moto, Baggett got another great start and held on for 2nd place to finish 2nd overall on the day.

Rookie Justin Hill came into Hangtown under the radar. Hangtown marked the SCOTT goggle athlete’s first outdoor national and Hill didn’t disappoint, scoring 13-9 moto scores for 10th overall on the day.

Coming off a long recovery after sustaining a severed Achilles tendon last season, SCOTT goggle athlete Darryn Durham was eager to get back to the gate. In the first moto, Darryn rode well and crossed the checkered flag 6th. While moving forward in the second moto, Durham suffered a nasty crash and was credited with 36th. With 6-36 moto scores, Durham was still able to earn 14th overall on the day.

After finishing 15th overall in one 2012 outdoor national, SCOTT goggle athlete Dillan Epstein knew he had what it takes to be competitive. Epstein had a great first moto and finished just outside the top ten in 11th. In the second moto, Epstein had to rally from deep in the pack to earn 23rd. Dillan earned 16th overall with 11-23 moto scores.

After a solid end to the Supercross season, SCOTT goggle athlete Martin Davalos was looking to take that momentum outdoors. In the first moto, while running inside the top 10 Davalos, suffered a hard get off and would not be able to finish the moto. Martin shook off the crash and came back in the second moto to finish 12th. Davalos still managed to earn 17th overall with a 38-12 score.

With one of the most competitive fields in recent memory lining up in the 450MX class, SCOTT goggle athlete Trey Canard wanted to prove to everyone that he is a championship contender. In the first 450MX moto, Trey got a solid top five start and quickly moved into 4th, where he would stay until the finish. Trey sat at 4th at the end of the second moto as well, which would secure 4th overall for the day. With a solid top 5 finish in the opening round, It is apparent that Trey is eager to be part of the hunt for the title.

Andrew Short went into Hangtown looking for a solid showing and a solid showing he would produce. Short grabbed a front of the pack start in moto one and held on to finish 6th. In the second moto, Andrew ran within the top 10 the entire moto and eventually finished in 10th. His 6-10 Moto scores earned him 7th overall on the day.

Monster Pro Circuit and SCOTT goggle athlete Tyla Rattray was Mr. Consistency at Hangtown, earning 9-9 moto scores for 9th overall.

450MX class rookie Dean Wilson earned an outdoor ride with the Monster Energy Pro Circuit team. Looking to show everyone that he has what it takes to compete in the premier class, Wilson was ready to make a statement. In the first moto, Deano was running 6th when he mistakenly stalled his bike and lost many spots. Wilson recovered for 17th. In the second moto, Wilson fell victim to a first turn pileup and had to work his way from 32nd to 14th by the checkered flag. Dean earned 14th overall for the day and showed he has the speed to compete with the rest of the field.
