2016 Motocross of Nations | MXGP Class

The hills of Maggiora came to life at the start of the day when Antonio Cairoli led the field through the first turn. The Italian inched away from Frenchman Romain Febvre in the early laps, but the distance between the two shrunk in the middle of the moto to less than a few feet. Lapped traffic helped Cairoli put more distance on Febvre, and all seemed set until a massive mistake on the descent of a steep hill put Cairoli on the ground and changed the course of the moto. With this Febvre took over and ran to the finish unchallenged, but the massive gap the two built over others in the field allowed Cairoli the opportunity to finish the race in second place.

A crash in the very early moments of the race put Cooper Webb on the ground and at the back of the pack. The American rallied and caught back up to the pack with an eighteenth place finish.

2016 Motocross of Nations | MX2 Class

Spaniard Jorge Prado pushed his way to the front of the pack in the first turn and led a number of laps in his first-ever MXoN. As one would expect, the rest of the field soon reeled in the teenager. Switzerland’s Jeremy Seewer and Belgium’s Jeremy Van Horebeek were the first to push Prado down the order and with that, all attention was turned to the two Europeans. Seewer fought off Van Horebeek’s advances for most of the moto, and the two even made contact in the final laps, but Van Horebeek managed to make a move stick and won the race by just over one second.

Alex Martin experienced two crashes in the quick moto, and according to the Amercian, one of them could have ended his weekend. Even with the get-offs, the event veteran charged to ninth place at the checkered flag.

2016 Motocross of Nations | Open Class

Jeffrey Herlings ruled the roost for the duration of the Open class moto, his first major race on the 450. The Dutch rider rode flawlessly and was able to break away from the three-way duel of French rider Gautier Paulin, Australian Dean Ferris, and Swiss Arnaud Tonus. These three stayed within sight of each other for the full race, but Paulin was able to hold off the other two for a critical second place finish.

American Jason Anderson got caught up in a first-turn crash and crossed the finish line on the first lap in last place. The crash reportedly busted the event rookie’s foot, but he eventually got going in the closing laps and claimed fourteenth in the final race of the afternoon.
