The full Star Racing announcement should come out at some point in the next few weeks, but that hasn’t stopped one of their newest riders from breaking the news. Last night Colt Nichols posted a series of images to his Instagram thanking his friends and supporters during the 2016 season, particularly the CycleTrader.com/Rock River Yamaha team and their staff, and then confirmed his signing to the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha team for the 2017 season.
Nichols turned pro in 2015 with the MotoSport.com/GPI/Crossland Racing and contested a handful of 250 East Coast SX races until a torn ACL ended his season. With little to show in results for the year, he was without a confirmed ride for 2016 until a last-minute agreement paired him with the CycleTrader.com/Rock River Yamaha crew. Solid finishes in the 250 West Coast SX series, including a second place in Oakland, raised the young Oklahoman’s stock in the sport and he was quickly locked in for 2017 by Yamaha’s official 250 team. Another knee injury put him on the sidelines during the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, but the ink was already dry on his agreement with Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha.
Although their full line-up is still unannounced, we know that Star Racing will field at least a four-rider effort in 2017. Their roster includes Aaron Plessinger, Mitchell Harrison, Colt Nichols, and MX2 import Dylan Ferrandis. There is a chance that they could have a fifth rider, but there is no confirmation one way or the other.
