Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Josh Grant is back on a bike and looking up to speed in preparation for the 2017 Monster Energy Supercross Series. The Riverside, California, native was burning some laps at Milestone MX this week and we caught up with him in the pits…

You have a new look this season….
Yeah! I’m pumped to have new gear and boot sponsors this year and happy to be on the team. I’ve been working hard the last few months, I feel great on the bike and my ankles are healthy!

It has to feel pretty awesome to be a valued guy on a team that believes in you and has your back….
For sure! The team was well aware of my messed up ankles last year and how they were hindering my riding, so to have all the support from them throughout the off-season was awesome. It’s definitely a good feeling coming out to the track knowing that everything is proper and the way that we want it, I’m going to continue to work my butt off and have even more fun this year than I did last year.

As we’ve seen in the past, a Josh Grant who’s having fun is a fast Josh Grant….
Yeah exactly! As long as we can celebrate and have a couple Coors Lights after, we’re golden! (laughs)

What type of surgery was done to your ankles and how gnarly was it?
It was pretty much one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with. I didn’t really expect to have as much pain as I did following the surgery, but I knew I had to have the operation done. It was hard finding a doctor that would do the surgery on both my ankles at the same time in the time period I needed, but luckily I found a guy that was willing to take on the operation. I ended up having a double ankle surgery, which consisted of a full reconstruction of all the ligaments and tendons. It was tough spending a couple months and most my summer in a wheelchair, but I knew it had to be done and my team supported me.

Are your ankles 100% as far as jogging and such?
Yeah, I can jog but I haven’t been able to run…like ever (laughs). There are some little issues with soreness and trying to stretch out tendons, but they feel a lot better compared to where they were.

Was protecting your ankles a factor when you chose your boot sponsor this season?
Yeah definitely. With all I put into fixing my ankles, I felt I needed to put them in a boot such as Alpinestars. I believe Alpinestars has the best support for your ankles out there, so I felt they were necessary.

We saw you out at A Day In The Dirt, how cool was it to be there hanging out with your kids, and why didn’t we didn’t see you racing?
I love riding and racing my dirt bike more than anything, but the team and I decided it was best to not take any risks, so I didn’t get the chance to race. Wyatt wanted to race, though; so we loaded everything up and I became a full mini-dad all weekend. He had a blast, even in Sunday’s mud! The whole event put a smile on everyone’s face from racing dirt bikes to roasting marshmallows in the campfire. The freedom to have fun is why I go to the event every year.
