In between races, we took some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
Last weekend at the All Japan MX National Championship series finale at Sugo Sportsland, veteran Yoshitaka Atsuta crossed the finish line for the last time, wrapping up an amazing 23-year professional racing career. Known by his friends and fans as “Yossy,” the 39-year-old from Sendai, Japan, has had an illustrious career that included the 2010 All Japan National MX Championship, which he won as a member of the factory Suzuki team. Atsuta spent plenty of time racing in the United States at selected events and scored between 10 to 61 points in seven different AMA 250 and 450 Nationals.
As he circled the track at Sugo, the veteran drew cheers from his hometown crowd, and after he wrapped up the day in sixth overall, he was mobbed on the track by a close group of friends who doused him in champagne. “Yossy has been a great, friendly rival,” said Akira Narita, who wrapped up his 11th All Japan National Championship on that same day. “He has always been my inspiration, and someone for me to look up to. I am sorry to see him retire as I will miss him, but I am happy that he finished his career healthy and happy.”
Congratulations on a great career, Yossy.
