San Bernardino, CA (November 16, 2009) – The cold, windy weather in Primm, NV this weekend didn’t stop Ricky James from piloting his SoCal SuperTrucks SuperLite to total domination by capturing both victories within the Lucas Oil Off Road Race Series, Rounds 11 and 12.
After starting the season late, and as a complete rookie and newcomer to the sport of 4-wheel, off-road racing, James has captured 5 out of 6 victories and one runner-up position.
Ricky was paralyzed from the chest down in a motocross racing accident in March of 2005. SoCal SuperTrucks outfitted the Super Lite race truck with hand controls that allow him to control the throttle, brake, clutch and shifting with his left hand while leaving his right hand free to steer.
Friday’s qualifying saw Ricky finish in 2nd position behind UTV Champion, Chad George. The track featured a demanding “rhythm section” which became somewhat of an obstacle for Ricky throughout the weekend. The truck also seemed to be “bogging”, so the SoCal SuperTrucks crew worked late into the night to find the problem and fix it. After cleaning the carburetor and replacing the alternator, Ricky tested the truck during Saturday’s practice and was ready for battle.
Saturday’s race saw Ricky and Chad George gap the rest of the field quickly after the green flag and it looked to be a fight to the finish until George became a casualty of the rhythm section, flipping his truck numerous times. The crash allowed James to finish the race, virtually un-contested, and come away with the victory.
Sunday’s race was nothing short of total domination. After qualifying first that morning, Ricky took the lead on the green flag and despite spinning out on the first lap which took him back to 6th position, he quickly took back the lead on the second lap and never looked back, winning by over 10 seconds.
“I want to thank everyone who helped me win this weekend”, said Ricky James. “These victories are a team effort and I appreciate all the help from everyone at SoCal SuperTrucks, Tom Morris, Dean Kuhn, Mike Johnson’s crew, my friends and family who came out to support me in the cold weather.”
Ricky’s other accomplishments include, 2008 West Coast Pro Truck Champion, 2008 West Coast Pro Truck Rookie of the year, 2008 70.3 Ironman World Champion, 2008 X Games Adaptive Motocross Silver medalist, 2008 Challenge Athlete of the year, 2007 Baja 500 finisher.
