TWMXRS West Coast Open | Milestone MX | Round 1
It has begun! The 2017 TWMXRS West Coast Open, presented by SPY, was kicked off this weekend, as the first stop of the series was hosted by Milestone MX. Hundreds of racers flocked to the Southern California facility for the opening round of the five stop series, and great times were had by all thanks to some great racing, epic weather conditions and a few recent changes to the “Amateur” and “Expert” tracks.
It’s not often that a newcomer to the TWMXRS completely dominates every moto they contest for, but that was the case at round one of the West Coast Open, as Cameron Scheller put on a clinic in Schoolboy and 125cc Open for both overalls. However, the Pittsburg native’s four race wins weren’t exactly handed to him. The #333 made a slight mistake during the opening laps of Schoolboy moto one, which cost him several positions, but he was able to charge through the pack for the race win. In moto two, Scheller found himself behind a number of riders after a bad start, but he wasted no time in picking off riders. With two laps to go though, Scheller made a mistake that cost him the lead, but he managed to work his way back into the lead before reaching the checkers. For his unrelenting efforts and dominant finishes, Scheller was chosen for the “SPY Breakaway Rider” award. Congratulations, Cameron!
Some impressive lap times were showcased throughout the day in 85-150F/Supermini class, as Jesse Grasso put on an absolute clinic this weekend at Milestone. Grasso put on a dominant performance during both motos aboard his KTM after grabbing the early lead and holding it all the way to the checkered flag for both moto wins along with the overall. The #129 wasn’t through yet though, because he went on to back up his performance in Supermini by taking another two moto wins and a second overall in Big Wheel Open 85/150F.
Dylan Gaszak was another rider to have a good day of racing at the opening round of the West Coast Open. Gaszak – who is a TWMXRS regular – rocketed out of the gate and into the early lead ultimately finishing with a commanding lead in both motos of 250 Intermediate. The Riverside, CA resident put together two consistent motos for his first overall victory of the year.
Thanks to all who joined us at Milestone MX this weekend for round one of the 2017 TWMXRS West Coast Open, presented by SPY. Next up, we’ll be heading to Glen Helen Raceway on April 23rd for round two following a two week break. See ya there!
