Arenacross Report: Denver Jan 28 – 29
Photos: Steve Cox
I drove to Denver for the 2nd round of the Arenacross West Coast Lites
series last week. On Thursday the promoters had me busy with press (which
was pretty fun). I did a call-in radio show first thing in the morning, an
in-studio interview with my bike and in gear with KUSA Channel 9 news at
noon. Then we headed to the arena and I had my first chance to ride an AMA
Arenacross track. I also did some television features for a few other
stations. It was all a good experience. I made some gearing changes with the
help of Tuf Racing for timed qualifiers the next day.
Friday: The first practice session was pretty good. I rode a little
tight but felt good. I was 12th fastest for all the 250cc’s. I made
changes again to my gearing for the second practice (to a 53″ rear
sprocket). I ended up qualifying 17th. I just couldn’t get a clean lap in.
I was happy to be in the evening program. Goal one – Check.
My heat race went ok but I still missed advancing by 2 spots and
went to the LCQ. The LCQ went better than my heat. I was able to move into
third but I missed the Main by one spot.
Saturday: Practice was really similar to Friday. My first session was better
than my second. There were more 250ccs racers on Saturday. I qualified 14th
in Timed Practice. In my heat race I worked up to ninth, then went to the
LCQ where I battled for 3rd place, banging bars the whole time. It was
amazing to hear the fans cheer the whole way through the race. They were so
loud and it really encouraged me.
I now have some new things to work on in practice and I am looking forward
to the next race in Reno (Feb 18/19). The whole thing was such a great
experience and everyone in Arenacross was so nice.
Special Thanks to Dave Analack at Tuf Racing for helping me out, working on
my bike, giving me race gas and letting me pit with the team! And to Denny
Bartz at Babbitt’s Kawasaki and Kevin Johnson from Team Faith for some line
Thank you to all my sponsors – Resner Builders and Hardware, K&N Filters,
Fox Racing, Factory Connection, Throttle Jockey Graphics, Works Connection, Vortex, Maxima Oils, CRF Stuff, Leatt, and X
Factor in Temecula, CA. – for helping me to race Arenacross!
I am looking forward to getting in the main in Reno.
