“The first round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship went off this past weekend in Rancho Cordova, California, at the famed Hangtown Raceway. After a long Supercross series it was refreshing to be outdoors and see the riders twist the throttle on a gnarly course. The threat of rain all weekend saw a much different race track than what we have seen in years previous. Usually Hangtown is known for how rough it gets at the opening round, but fearing the rain, the track crew didn’t rip the course very deep and held off on the watering in the early morning. It rained much of Friday and I was definitely expecting some muddy conditions come race morning, but when I arrived at the track I was shocked to find everything bone dry. All week leading up to Hangtown the weather forecast called anywhere from 60- to 90-percent chance of rain on race day, but it held off almost the entire day except for a small downpour during the first 250 motos that only lasted a few minutes. I love shooting at Hangtown as it’s one of the easiest courses to maneuver around the infield, although this year there were some challenges with a lot of VIP guests and industry people checking out the action from there. The action was top notch in both classes, and I was extremely impressed with Joey Savatgy going 1-1 in the 250 class and Ken Roczen doing the same in the 450 class. Both riders used their momentum from the last few Supercrosses to really dominate the first round of outdoors. See you at the races!” —TWMX photographer Ryne Swanberg
