Welcome back. After much anticipation, the 2017 Monster Energy Supercross Series kicked off its seventeen-round run through North America this past weekend at Angels Stadium of Anaheim in Southern California. Will this truly be the best year in the sport’s history? Hard to say, but after watching the action on Saturday night we can certainly say that the speed and talent have never been better.
– The twenty-two rider field in the 450 main event featured fourteen past champions, while another past champ (Pourcel) missed cut by just one spot in the LCQ.
– For an “ancient bike” the Suzuki RM-Z450 is certainly popular. With two factory-supported teams and a handful of privateers on RM-Z machines, there were six yellow front fenders in the 450 main event.
– How about the new timed race format? Well, they worked out to be the exact same duration at the season opener. Not a surprise, because many past Anaheim main events ran around fifteen to twenty minutes long. This weekend at San Diego will be the first real test of the new rules.
