In between races, we took some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…

During the press day riding sessions at the 2017 Glen Helen MX, Jimmy Decotis was more than willing to run a Garmin camera on top of his helmet for our site. When I played the footage back on a computer a few hours later and saw how quickly the GEICO Honda rider got around the hilly Southern California circuit, I was in awe at how the speed seemed so second-nature for Decotis. But one of the most honest moments of the video was cut from the edit; after one incredibly fast lap, he pulled into the pit area and voiced his frustrations with “not going fast enough.” That weekend, Jimmy D posted 11-34 moto scores for seventeenth overall, which was by no means an indication of his true potential. You can watch the video here and yes, that is the true speed.

Decotis has been MIA from the starting line for most of the summer. His initial contract with the team only ran for the first three rounds of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship and soon after the final lap at Thunder Valley, Decotis found out that he’d caught Lyme Disease. Instead of unnecessarily pushing his body to the limit, Decotis has stayed low key for the last few weeks and just recently resumed riding in Southern California.

Considering the way that some of Decotis’ peers in the 250 class have flourished later in their career, I think that a similar breakthrough could come for “The Rippa.” His riding style never seems too reckless or on the edge and he’s shown that he can match the pace of nearly anyone on a small-bore bike.
