In between races, we took some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
I got my start in photography at the end of 2007, as I received my first camera from my parents as a Christmas gift. It was a Canon Digital Rebel – the first generation – that came with one of those starter kits from eBay. Equipped with a Canon 18-55mm lens, a Tamron 70-300mm and a weird, off-brand flash I took to Lake Elsinore MX with an old friend to shoot my first batch of motocross photos. At that time, I think there were only half a dozen or so moto photographers located here in So.Cal, so I hardly ever saw them, let alone had a chance to ask for pointers or tips. Ultimately I taught myself, but much of what I learned came from the SCAN pages of TransWorld Motocross Magazine, as it featured images from a few of my favorite shooters like Garth Milan, Chris Tedesco, and of course the rest of the TWMX staff.
I think I found that section of the magazine so intriguing because of the amount of creativity that those photographers put into creating those images. That was something that I could really appreciate, so naturally I've always tried to emulate that style.
Just last week, I was invited to Pala Raceway's freestyle motocross course to shoot a few of the local FMXers as they prepare for the upcoming 2017 X Games, and as I stepped out of my truck somebody said to me, "Dude, are you following me?" I quickly turned around to see Chris Tedesco, who I've seen more times in the last two weeks than I have over the last year. Chris is an incredibly talented and diverse photographer, so I've always felt the need to soak up game whenever I'm around him, and last week at Pala was no different. I managed to capture this shot of Chris doing his thing, and as you can see I caught his' flash burst at the same time. Thanks for the light, Chris, haha!
