hey Juan127, que onda cabron!

I've seen Stewart at least once or twice ride with the leatt, but I guess your question is about why doesn't he uses it regularly.

I don't remember watching RC racing with it, but then again, who am I to question the GOAT??

The leatt is a great product, I ride with it and it doesn't bother me at all, if any, like you said, it gives me a little extra confidence knowing it's there, just in case.

Ok, as a medic, I am ALL about safety. I make sure I wear a certified helmet, boots, and a good proven chest guard, not just a roost deflector. I dont wear a Leatt for several reasons and I dont recommend it to all.

First off, breaking your neck, is EXTREMELY hard to do. I have seen accidents that you have no idea how they ae ok but its just the facts. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning according to statistics. And just so you know, there are documented incidents where people wearing the leatt brace STIL fractured vertebrae in the necks. One in europe died from his collar bone breaking and getting pushed down severing a vein. The braces MUST be fitted perfect or they will cause more damage than they could ever protect.

The neck brace has just started in our sport and until they get the kinks worked out it not worth taking the chances. The Alpinestar one is designed specifically for the correct angle of protection and to not break collarbones.  Thousands and thousands of riders  have ridden in the past and today and crashed hard, and never broke their necks.

I will wait until they perfect them and then if they are right, maybe.

 3. And finally, the person who said that with the brace on they are more prone to breaking their collar bone… That is not even smart thinking. It only takes 10lbs. to break your clavicle. If you tip over and just land the wrong way, that would be enough to break it.

As someone who wore a Leatt and crashed hard, I got to say the Leatt will cause additional injury. Its a trade off for all the energy the unit takes in from a crash, its got to go someplace. I landed on my back/side and the Leatt kept me from smacking my head on the ground (no concussion) and kept my neck/spine injury free. However, the front of the Leatt dug into my chest and cracked my sternum and broke the #1 & #2 ribs on BOTH sides. Until I showed my doctor the Leatt, they were confused as to how I could have extensive injuries to my right back side (8 broken ribs creating a flail chest, perforated lung with hemothorax, 30% lung capacity loss) as well as the front.

I saw Stewart wearing one for practice at Washougal in 06. he tore it off after 3 laps. Some people simply can't ride with it, it affects the way we ride, especially with fox helmets that sit low. any movement such as looking far ahead or scrubbing a jump will be affected if you cant move your head and shoulders freely. until they make the leatt sit lower it will be hard to wear with some helmets and with some short necked riders. The alpinestars looks like it would be nice but it would affect sponsors if the brands clashed. and they are spendy.

I don't think the leatt was around back then. He wore one last year. I think it was Millville practice. He says he doesn't feel free with it on.

I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD WEAR A LEATT. ANY SAFTY DEVICE WILL HELP. PLUS WERE TALKIN THE NECK… IF YOU BREAK THAT YOUR SKREWED FOR LIFE. I WOULD RATHER SPEND 400 BONES, EVEN IF IT DOESNT WORK 2 OUT OF 10 SITUATIONS

Racing is a dangerous sport. No equipment is going to protect you %100. All these motox guys riding around the track looking like football players because they have so much protective gear on is funny smash to me. If you don't want to accept the fact that it's dangerous, don't ride. No one wore any of this stuff they have out today 10 yrs ago. I wonder what the statistics are on injuries before the leatt, knee braces, elbow pads, knee pads, vagina gaurd, hands pads and wrists gaurds.

Well, money over safety is most likel what it is.  They decided to take a risk assessment and money won out.  No worries, they have earned the right to make that choice with no judgment.

The guys that worked on alot of the neck and back brace issues and systems were the same people that worked on the hahns device for nascar. I rode factory Yamaha 31 years ago so that tells you where technology was back then leather pants hunting boots and so on. My son wheres one no restriction at all and if they think there to good to fall well I guess Dale Earnhardt wasnt to good to crash and if he would have had all the protection they have done since he crased I think he would still be racing today no doubt.

It's all about comfort with those guys.  Look how many pros races without  a chest protector.

lol… every pro wears a chest protector… the ones that you see without a protector are wearing the kevlar ones (made from, but not the same, obviously, as the bullet proof ones). They are very thin, and tight.. They are like $200, i used to have one but i grew out of it and i didnt like the way is sat on my body anyway so i just got a regular plastic one…

Not a smart statement.

At the MXoN I had the honor to meet Danny “Magoo” Chandler, and while he accepted the risks, he (as a quadriplegic) has a VERY DIFFERENT opinion than yours. I have a paralized friend, I don't look like a football player, BUT I DO wear a Leatt, a modified chest protector, and a good helmet. even a neck roll is fine (I learned it the hard way, while practicing back flips with my bicycle), I don't care a lot about a broken collarbone, elbow or whatever, BUT I DO WANT to keep walking and enjoing life to the full.

As someone who broke their neck in 02 and is in a wheelchair, I have to put in my ¢ .02 worth.

No amount of insurance can repair a broken neck.  My insurance is out over $400,000 so far and that doesn't include what I've been out personally.  An attendant to help me bathe 3x a week, a specially equipped van to carry my power wheelchair and me around, plus a list of small things that's too long to mention.

As for the Medic that claims it's EXTREMELY hard to break a vertebrae, I say BS.  I broke C 6/7 in a very easy fall while training on my mountain bike.  Not a bruise or scratch on me otherwise.

Additionally, a spinal cord injury doesn't effect just the paralyzed person.  It effects everybody that cares about them.

But hey, if people want to increase their chance of having to have someone cut their food, have to urinate into a bag strapped to their leg, have someone set them on a “potty chair” to have a BM and then have that same someone wipe their butt, it's an individuals choice.

I used to wear a leatt but it causes alot more injuries. In the amount of time I had the leatt on I dislocated my shoulder 3 times, broke my shoulder blade, cracked a collar bone, and tore ligaments in my shoulder. I never had any problems with my shoulders till I wore the leatt and now that I am leatt free I have not had any problems!
